College Top 25: Feb. 24

DURHAM, N.C.—After a sweep of East Carolina, including an impressive showing against preseason first-team All-American Jeff Hoffman, Virginia remains No. 1 in Baseball America’s Top 25 rankings.

Austin Robichaux was strong Friday against Southern Miss.

Brandon Downes homered twice Friday against Hoffman, a presumptive top-5 draft pick in June, as the Cavaliers improved to 6-1.

Unbeaten Florida State moved up to No. 2, taking two games from Georgia before Sunday’s rainout. South Carolina used dominant pitching to move to No. 3. The Gamecocks had a 4-0 week, including a three-game sweep of Eastern Kentucky and extended their scoreless streak to 51 innings behind Jordan Montgomery, Jack Wynkoop and freshman Wil Crowe.

Among the big movers was Cal Poly. Unranked in the preseason, the Mustangs entered the rankings last week at No. 22 and move to No. 13 this week after an impressive road series against defending champion UCLA. The Bruins beat ace Matt Imhof in the opener, but Cal Poly bounced back to win the series, thanks to a strong start from freshman Slater Lee (9 IP, 2 H, 0 R), and five RBIs combined on Saturday and Sunday from Nick Torres.

Louisiana-Lafayette (7-1), jumped to No. 10 by sweeping a road series against Southern Miss. The Cajuns were led by junior righthander Austin Robichaux, who allowed only two earned runs over seven innings in Friday’s win.

Indiana and Mississippi State, both preseason Top 10 teams, continued to drop following disappointing starts.

The Hoosiers, who fell to 10th from third last week, are down to No. 17 following a 1-2 week. After beating Washington to begin the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge in Arizona, IU fell to Utah in 15 innings and lost Sunday to No. 4 Oregon State, 8-1.

Mississippi State, No. 10 in the preseason, dropped to 18th this week after going 2-3, including splitting a home series against Holy Cross. Wes Rea did homer three times in Saturday’s doubleheader split.
