Cape Cod League Gears Up With Stacked Rosters (VIDEO)

The Cape Cod League, the premier college summer league, gets started Wednesday, and we’ve got the full team rosters and notes for you below.

This year marks the 130th season of the Cape League, which features a 44-game regular season, a July 26 all-star game at Doran Park (home of the Bourne Braves) and a best-of-three playoff format starting on Aug. 5.

Last year, the Cotuit Kettleers swept the Orleans Firebirds in the Championship to win the Cape title, and Bradley Zimmer (who was recently drafted 21st overall by the Indians) was named the MVP of the postseason.

Every year, the Cape is littered with some of the top names in college baseball, and this summer is no different. The league currently features 36 players who graced Baseball America’s preseason top 50 sophomores list, and 13 players who ranked among the top 50 freshmen.

Here’s how each team stacks up with those players:

Bourne Braves—five top 50 sophomores, three top 50 freshmen

Brewster Whitecaps—four top 50 sophomores, one top 50 freshman

Chatham Anglers—one top 50 sophomore, one top 50 freshman

Cotuit Kettleers—four top 50 sophomores, two top 50 freshmen

Falmouth Commodores—four top 50 sophomores, two top 50 freshmen

Harwich Mariners—four top 50 sophomores, one top 50 freshman

Hyannis Harbor Hawks—one top 50 sophomore, one top 50 freshman

Orleans Firebirds—eight top 50 sophomores, one top 50 freshman

Wareham Gateman—one top 50 sophomore

Yardmouth-Dennis Red Sox—four top 50 sophomores, one top 50 freshman

Players to keep an eye on:

• In Ian Happ’s (Harwich) second season with Cincinnati, he put up eerily similar numbers to his freshman season. During his first year with the Bearcats, Happ played in 56 games and hit .322/.443/.497 with five homers. This season, Happ hit .322/.443/.497 with five home runs in 51 games. He was ranked as the nation’s No. 2 sophomore before this season.

Ryan Burr (Bourne) took a step back in his second season with Arizona State. After striking out 60 batters, walking 23 and posting a 2.20 ERA in 45 innings his freshman year, 2014 saw most of his numbers decline. In 44 innings Burr struck out less (56) and walked more (38), while putting up a 3.27 ERA in 44 innings. He was the No. 4 sophomore before this season.

Skye Bolt (Harwich) ranked as the No. 5 sophomore before the season, but had a tough year at the plate with North Carolina. The switch-hitting outfielder hit just .257/.373/.353 with four home runs and 32 RBIs in 61 games after a freshman campaign where he hit .349/.449/.550 with six home runs and 47 RBIs in 43 games.

• After working out of the bullpen for 16 games during his freshman season, Kyle Funkhouser (Chatham) took a big step forward with Louisville this year. He carries a 1.73 ERA into the College World Series and leads the team in wins (13), games started (17), innings pitched (114) and strikeouts (117). Before the season, he ranked as the No. 6 sophomore.

Kenny Towns (Harwich) is one of the many Virginia players taking part in the Cape this summer, but the only one who isn’t a rising junior. After going undrafted (due in part to signability), the rising senior infielder will try and improve his draft value to become one of the many senior signs that take place in the later rounds in 2015. Through the super regionals (50 games), Towns hit .273/.377/.398 with a pair of home runs.

Chandler Eden (Falmouth) pitched in just eight innings for Oregon State this year and struggled in most of them. He gave up seven hits and seven runs in his limited season, while walking four and striking out six. Eden definitely has the stuff to be successful at the college level (he was ranked No. 72 in the BA 500 for the 2013 draft), but he stands to benefit from logging innings this summer.

Cavan Biggio (Harwich) was the No. 8 freshman coming into the season and started 52 games for Notre Dame. He finished the year with a .246/.329/.353 triple slash, 10 doubles, two triples and a pair of home runs.

Players who are still involved in the College World Series:

Louisville: Anthony Kidston, Josh Rogers, Jacob Sparger, Zack Burdi, Kyle Funkhouser, Drew Harrington, Danny Rosenbaum, Corey Ray

Mississippi: Matt Denny, Errol Robinson

Texas: Ben Johnson, Tres Barrera, Travis Duke, C.J. Hinojosa

UC Irvine: Chris Rabago, Connor Spencer, Sam Moore, Elliot Surrey

Vanderbilt: Jason Delay, Carson Fullmer, Rhett Wiseman, Tyler Ferguson, Hayden Stone, Dansby Swanson, Walker Buehler, Xavier Turner

Virginia: Kenny Towns, Joe McCarthy, John Laprise, Cameron Tekker, Brandon Waddell, Nathan Kirby, Josh Sborz

Below are the rosters for each team in the Cape as of June 10.
