We’ve had quite a few memorable games already this postseason, but Sam Houston State’s 12-11 win over Southern Mississippi in the Oxford regional this afternoon is a strong nominee for game of the weekend. The Bearkats fell behind 7-1 entering the seventh-inning stretch, but they began their comeback with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Sam Houston State added two more in the eighth to tie the score at 7-7, but Southern Miss answered with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth. Undaunted, the Bearkats scored two more in the bottom of the frame to force extra innings. The two teams traded runs in the 10th, and the Golden Eagles scored again in the top of the 11th to go up 11-10. USM turned to J.R. Ballinger to start the bottom of the 11th, and he retired the first two batters of the inning. But SHSU never quit, stringing together four straight singles with two outs to take a wild 12-11 win. The Bearkats can keep their magical postseason run alive by winning two games in a row against host Mississippi. That figures to be a tall order, but whatever happens, this has been an unforgettable run.
