Three Texas Christian players were drafted in rapid succession early in the fifth round. Catcher Andrew Walker went to the Pirates with the fourth pick in the round, and righthander Jake Arrieta was taken a pick later by the Orioles. Five picks after that, the Giants grabbed righthander Chance Corgan.
As a fifth-rounder, Arrieta could be the steal of the draft. The No. 7 ranked prospect in the junior class entering the year, Arrieta has a prototype pitcher’s frame (6-foot-4, 225 pounds) and power stuff, though he did not have a great year for the Horned Frogs. But he showed three very promising pitches late in the year, including a 90-94 mph fastball, a 78-81 mph slider and a 74-76 mph split-finger. Seems like a tremendous value for the Orioles, because Arrieta’s upside is huge.
