Low A Dish: Britton Takes Down Lakewood

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Delmarva (Orioles) lefthander Zach Britton wins the award after pitching seven shutout innings against Lakewood (Phillies). Britton allowed only three hits, two walks and struck out seven. Britton bounced back from a rough outing in his last start against Lakewood, when he allowed eight baserunners in only three innings of work, to collect his sixth win of the year and lower his ERA to 2.99.

Prospect Nuggets

Asheville (Rockies) lost a game started by Jhoulys Chacin for the first time since April 14. Chacin gave up three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings against Augusta (Giants), but received no decision … Columbus (Rays) righthander Alex Cobb (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO) had another strong outing, but as usual didn’t get any run support and took another no decision. Cobb hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any of his last seven starts, yet he has only one win over that span … Greensboro (Marlins) right fielder Mike Stanton homered for the third straight day, going 2-for-3 three with a double added in also against West Virginia (Brewers). Low A Dish: Bumgarner Fans 10

Madison Bumgarner dominated Asheville, Mike Moustakas broke out of a slump, and Mat Latos came back from injury in Wednesday’s low Class A action.

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Madison Bumgarner is the Sally League’s youngest pitcher, but he’s sure looking like a guy who’s been around the block a time or two. The Augusta (Giants) lefthander continued his domination of Sally League hitters last night by going into Asheville (Rockies) and throwing a seven-inning, complete-game shutout in the front end of a doubleheader. Bumgarner struck out the side in the first and went on to fan 10 Tourists hitters while permitting only four hits (all singles) and no walks. What’s more, he did all this while protecting only a 1-0 lead after Augusta scored a run in the top of the first on a Nick Noonan home run but was shut out the rest of the way by Asheville’s Bruce Billings. Only one Asheville baserunner reached scoring position all night, and Bumgarner finished the night in style by striking out two Asheville hitters in the bottom of the seventh, including Brian Rike swinging to end the game. Bumgarner improved to 6-2 on the season and dropped his ERA under 2.00 to a mark of 1.96.

Low A Dish: Dominguez Keeps Raking

Matt Dominguez continued his hot hitting, Brandon Hamilton had his best outing of the season and Jason Heyward was back in action.

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Greensboro (Marlins) third baseman Matt Dominguez has been on a tear ever since returning to action in mid-May after missing the first month and a half of the season due to mononucleosis. Dominguez turned his fourth straight multi-hit effort last night by going 3-for-5 as Greensboro cruised past Lexington (Astros) 13-4. The 12th overall pick in last year’s draft, Dominguez hit his second home run of the season as well and raised his line to .354/.434/.523 in 65 at-bats.

Prospect Nuggets

Braves fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Jason Heyward was back in the Rome lineup last night against Charleston (Yankees). He went 1-for-4 … Dominguez and teammate Mike Stanton could be turning into another dangerous tandem. Stanton went 2-for-5 last night and took over the league home run lead by hitting his 13th long ball of the year … Greenville (Red Sox) shortstop Oscar Tejeda went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI in a 10-9 win against Hickory (Pirates) … Ryan Kalish went only 1-for-4 for Greenville, but his one hit was a game-tying home run in the top of the ninth, his third of the season … Savannah (Mets) righthander Nick Carr struggled mightily in high Class A, going 0-7, 7.19 in 12 starts for St. Lucie, but he shined last night in his first start after a demotion to Savannah. Carr pitched into the eighth against Columbus (Rays), allowing only one run on four hits, with one walk and four strikeouts. [...] Continue Reading »

Low A Dish: Duffy Does It Again

Danny Duffy dominated again, Cole Rohrbough and Phillippe Aumont had rough nights, and Ben Revere had another three hits.

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Monday was a pretty slow day in terms of standout performances by prospects in the Sally League. Nevertheless, Greensboro (Marlins) left fielder Tom Hickman gets today’s POTD award after going 3-for-4 with three RBIs in a 7-5 win over Lexington (Astros). Hickman hit a two-run double in the third and added an RBI single in the seventh. The 20-year-old Hickman turned in his fourth multi-hit game in the last eight, although his line still stands at only .228/.365/.395.

Prospect Nuggets

Hitting in front of Hickman in the Greensboro order was third baseman Matt Dominguez, who went 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs … Charleston (Yankees) shortstop Carmen Angelini went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored against Rome (Braves) … Rome was able to overcome a rough outing by Cole Rohrbough (3.0 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO) by coming from behind to beat the RiverDogs 8-7. Rohrbough struck out the side in the top of the first, but gave up three runs in each of the next two frames before being removed. The winning run in that game scored on a walk-off suicide squeeze, when Rome’s Adam Coe laid down a bunt while Yohan Silva sprinted home. [...] Continue Reading »

Low A Dish: Locke Turns It Around

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

While Rome (Braves) plays on as it awaits word on Jason Heyward’s status, Braves lefthander Jeff Locke takes today’s POTD award. Locke has had his ups and downs in 2008, but he looks like he’s trending in the right direction after turning in his fourth straight quality start Sunday against Columbus (Rays). The caveat is that one of those "starts" was actually a seven-inning relief appearance after a John Smoltz rehab start, but we’ll give him credit for it anyway. Against the Catfish, the lefthander went seven innings, allowed one run on four hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Locke left the game with a 2-1 lead, however the Rome bullpen allowed Columbus to rally late for a 5-2 win, keeping Locke’s record at an unsightly 1-7.

Prospect Nuggets

Savannah (Mets) righthander Scott Moviel tossed seven innings against Charleston (Yankees), allowing only two runs (one earned) on three hits. He walked one and fanned six to improve his record to 5-7 … Moviel’s teammate, second baseman Greg Veloz went 2-for-4, scored two runs and stole his 20th base … After giving up five home runs in his last start, Columbus lefty Glenn Gibson came out of the bullpen yesterday in Rome. He pitched two shutout innings, gave up two hits and struck out two. He was also the beneficiary of Columbus’ late rally, as Gibson was the winning pitcher to improve his record to 2-8 … Lexington (Astros) center fielder Collin DeLome turned in his third three-hit game in his last six after going 3-for-5 with a double and a home run in 16-8 win over West Virginia (Brewers) … Asheville (Rockies) shortstop Everth Cabrera went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run in a 7-5 loss to Augusta (Giants). Cabrera also stole his minor league-leading 42nd base of the season.

Low A Dish: Naylor Grounds Shorebirds

Drew Naylor dominated Delmarva, Andrew Lambo did a number on West Michigan, and Madison Bumgarner couldn’t go forever without giving up a long ball.

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Lakewood (Phillies) righthander Drew Naylor threw his second complete game and had his third double-digit strikeout game last night against Delmarva (Orioles). Naylor went the distance allowing one run on five hits, with one walk and a season-high 13 strikeouts. The ball rarely left the infield as Naylor induced 12 groundouts to go with the punch outs.  He began the night by striking out the side in the top of the first and carried a shutout into the ninth before losing it on a single, a double and an RBI groundout.  Prior to that inning, Naylor never allowed the Shorebirds to get multiple men on base in the same inning and no baserunner had gotten past second. Naylor’s 91 strikeouts on the season leads the SAL and is second in the minors.

Prospect Nuggets

After not allowing a single home run through his first 10 starts, Augusta (Giants) lefthander Madison Bumgarner gave up two last night in Greenville (Red Sox). He ended up going six innings, allowing only those two runs, with six hits, one walk and five strikeouts. He received no decision in a 6-4 Greenville win … Greenville right fielder Ryan Kalish had two hits off Bumgarner and finished the night 3-for-4 … Lexington (Astros) left fielder Collin DeLome went 3-for-3 with a stolen base in a 5-4 loss to Greensboro (Marlins) … Hagerstown (Nationals) third baseman Stephen King went 3-for-5 with a home run, his third, and two RBIs in a 10-6 loss to Lake County (Indians), raising his line to .361/.415/.546 in 119 at-bats.

Low A Dish: Duffy Handcuffs Clinton

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Augusta (Giants) second baseman Nick Noonan went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, giving him 13 for the season, in a 7-3 loss to Greenville (Red Sox), raising his line to .284/.314/.442. Although the 19-year-old Noonan is hitting for a lower average than he did last year in the AZL, when he hit .316/.357/.451 in his pro debut, his power numbers are about the same and he’s continued to show a knack for picking his spots to steal bases, going 12-for-13 in that department so far this year.

Prospect Nuggets

After getting a day off on Tuesday, Rome (Braves) right fielder Jason Heyward was back at work on Wednesday against Charleston (Yankees). Heyward went 2-for-4 with an RBI … Heyward did his work in support of lefthander Cole Rohrbough, who allowed one run (unearned) on four hits over six innings to pick up his first win of the year. He walked three and struck out five … Greensboro (Marlins) right fielder Mike Stanton went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs in a 7-4 win over Lexington (Astros). [...] Continue Reading »

Low A Dish: Lincoln Cools Down Asheville

Brad Lincoln shut down a hot Asheville club, Jordan Walden couldn’t get any help, and Savannah’s offense exploded against Glenn Gibson and Columbus.

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

The Asheville Tourists (Rockies) had won nine in a row and sport the best record in the SAL, but they were cooled off last night when they ran into Hickory (Pirates) righthander Brad Lincoln. After missing all of 2007 due to Tommy John surgery, Lincoln has made four starts for Hickory since returning in mid-May and has permitted only five runs in 22 1/3 innings with a 15-1 K-BB ratio. Against the Tourists, Lincoln went 6 1/3 and allowed only one run on five hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

LoA Dish: Kozma Heats Back Up

It’s a crazy time of year here at Baseball America with the NCAA tournament, the draft and a special Tuesday Hot Sheet. So our apologies, but it’s an abbreviated Dish today.

MIDWEST LEAGUE

Prospect Of The Day

Because he plays in the Midwest League, where a .400 slugging percentage is actually not bad, it’s easy to miss the season shortstop Pete Kozma is having. Kozma had an excellent April, before slumping in May. But he started off June on a better foot, going 3-for-4 with a double and a triple. Despite hitting .189/.280/.221 in May, Kozma is still hitting .274/.358/.400 overall.

Prospect Nuggets

Catcher Devin Mesoraco (Reds) hit his third home run of the season. He also was kept very busy behind the plate, as he threw out two of the six Whitecaps who tried to steal against him . . . Alfredo Silverio (Dodgers) hates to walk, which explains why he has a .287 batting average and a .279 on-base percentage, but the 21-year-old did have a double and a triple on Monday.

SOUTH ATLANTIC LEAGUE

Prospect Of The Day

The .241 batting average is lower than you would like to see, and a recent slump has dipped his on-base percentage to .296, but Angel Villalona (Giants) is still hitting for power. The 17-year-old hit his seventh home run of the season for Augusta on Monday. Probably more surprisingly, Villalona also beat out an infield single later in the game.

Prospect Nuggets

Asheville shortstop Everth Cabrera (Rockies) has the two skills you want in a leadoff hitter–he knows how to get on base (.380 on-base percentage) and he knows what to do once he gets there. Cabrera stole two more bases on Monday, giving him 40 in 44 attempts this season . . . Cabrera’s teammate Darin Holcomb, a 12th-round pick out of Gonzaga last year, went 3-for-5 with two doubles, he’s now hitting .332/.392/.553 . . . Poor Alex Cobb (Rays) is saddled with being a good pitcher on a bad team. Cobb allowed two runs in 7 1/3 innings on Monday, which was enough for his second loss in the past four starts. During that stretch he has allowed five runs in 26 1/3 innings . . .  Danny Otero (Giants) picked up his 15th save of the season. He maintained his 0.00 ERA, as he hasn’t given up a run in 21 appearances . . . Nick Noonan (Giants) added his third home run of the season . . . Michael Stanton (Marlins) hit only one home run in his pro debut last year. He’s making up for it this year, as he hit his 11th home run of the young season . . . No one can stop Michael Taylor (Phillies). The Sally League’s leader in almost every category besides home runs hit his ninth home run of the season on Monday. He’s now hitting .361/.438/.579.

Low A Dish: Mitchell Shuts Down L’Kings

Matt Mitchell outdueled Blake Beavan, Jhoulys Chacin had an uncharacteristically tough start, and Carmen Angelini had a three-hit night.

Midwest League

Prospect Of The Day

Burlington (Royals) righthander Matt Mitchell put together a sterling performance yesterday when he outdueled Clinton (Rangers) righthander Blake Beavan in a 3-1 Burlington win. Mitchell shut down the MWL’s best offense over seven innings, holding the first-place LumberKings to one run on two hits, with three strikeouts and no walks. He retired the side in order five times and faced only two hitters over the minimum. He improved his record to 3-4 and dropped his ERA to 3.75

Prospect Nuggets

One of Clinton’s two hits off Mitchell came off the bat of center fielder Engel Beltre in the sixth, however Beltre was thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple … Beavan (7.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) pitched well himself, but dropped to 4-2 on the season … Cedar Rapids (Angels) lefthander Trevor Reckling returned from the DL after missing time with a left triceps strain and threw six shutout innings against Kane County (Athletics), but received no run support and didn’t factor in the decision … Beloit (Twins) right fielder Joe Benson went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored in the Snappers’ 10-5 win over Quad Cities (Cardinals).

Low A Dish: Aumont Fires Away

It’s a Hot Sheet Friday, so the Low A Dish will be short and sweet. Jonathan Lucroy had another three-hit game, Phillippe Aumont had a strong outing, and Jordan Walden didn’t.

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

West Virginia (Brewers) catcher Jonathan Lucroy wins the prize after going 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, two RBIs, and a stolen base in a 4-3 win over Greensboro (Marlins). This was his third straight three-hit game and he raised his line to .319/.389/.524.

Prospect Nuggets

Rome (Braves) first baseman Freddy Freeman went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI against Asheville (Rockies) … Greenville (Red Sox) center fielder Ryan Kalish went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in the Drive’s 7-5 win over Columbus (Rays) … Lexington (Astros) catcher Max Sapp went 3-for-4 with a double against Kannapolis (White Sox).

Low A Dish: Road Warrior Mike Moustakas

Mike Moustakas went deep again, Tyler Henson had a four-hit game, and Ryan Miller’s teammates bailed him out in Wednesday’s low Class A action.

Midwest League

Prospect Of The Day

Burlington (Royals) shortstop Mike Moustakas has cooled off a little bit since his red-hot start to May, but he’s found his power stroke again this week in impressive fashion. Moustakas went 2-for-5 with a home run, his seventh of the year, last night in Burlington’s 4-1, 11-inning win over Quad Cities (Cardinals). The home run was the second in a set of back-to-back homers in the 11th inning off Quad Cities’ Dylan Gonzalez (David Lough hit the first, a two-run shot). Moustakas hadn’t gone deep since May 6, but he’s now homered in three consecutive games giving him six this month.

Moustakas has fared far better on the road than at home. He’s hitting .294/.323/.564 on the road and only .205/.245/.273 at Burlington’s Community Field, and six of his seven home runs have come away from home. His line for the season improved to .254/.304/.429 in 189 at-bats.

Low A Dish: Heyward At It Again

Jason Heyward and Alex Cobb were both outstanding, Mike Stanton and Matt Dominguez each had big nights, and Lakewood kept its winning streak alive.

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

There were two very deserving candidates for Tuesday’s POTD award, so we’ll split it down the middle. We’ll start with Rome (Braves) right fielder Jason Heyward. After a relatively quiet week, by his standards, last week, Heyward made the most of his Memorial Day weekend, going 8-for-19 from Friday through Monday. But that pales in comparison to what he did yesterday against Hickory (Pirates). Heyward went 4-for-5 with a home run, his seventh, and a double in the Braves’ 5-4, 10-inning victory. And he wasn’t doing it against any slouch either in Hickory starter Duke Welker, against whom Heyward went 3-for-3. Heyward has hits in 18 of his last 19 games, and his line stands at .340/.374/.517.

Our other honoree is Columbus (Rays) righthander Alex Cobb. Starting on the road against the team with the SAL’s best record in Asheville (Rockies), Cobb pitched seven shutout innings, allowed only one hit, one walk and recorded six strikeouts. Cobb was perfect through four and carried a no-hitter into the sixth before losing it on an infield single by Tourists center fielder Michael Mitchell. Cobb retired the side in order five times in all, including in the seventh, his final inning. Cobb left the game with the Catfish ahead 1-0, but his fine work was all for naught, as the Tourists  scrapped together a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth and won the game 2-1, handing the struggling Catfish their sixth straight loss. Although this was his best start of the year, Cobb has been effective all season. He’s held opponents to two runs or fewer in 9 of his 11 starts, and his 2.13 ERA ranks ninth in the league.

Low A Dish: Noonan Carves Up Charleston

Nick Noonan was all over the place against Charleston, Engel Beltre hit a home run and Blake Beavan had another strong outing.

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Augusta (Giants) second baseman Nick Noonan went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, and four RBIs as the GreenJackets teed off on Charleston (Yankees) starter Dellin Betances (3.2 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO). He did much of his damage early. With Augusta trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the third and a man on first, Noonan hit an RBI double that tied the game, then stole third and scored the go-ahead run when Charleston third baseman Brandon Laird couldn’t handle the throw. He followed that up with a two-out, two-run homer in the fourth, the first in a set of back-to-back home runs (Garrett Baker hit the second) that spelled the end of Betances’ day. Noonan added an RBI single in the sixth that made the score 9-4 at the time, but proved to be the difference in the game as the RiverDogs scored four times in the eighth before the GreenJackets escaped with a 9-8 win. Noonan raised his line to .283/.310./.429.

Low A Dish: Burgess, Mesoraco Star

Michael Burgess had a big night, Devin Mesoraco had his best night so far, and Matt Dominguez had three hits in his second game off the disabled list.

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Hagerstown (Nationals) right fielder Michael Burgess wins the award for Thursday. The 19-year-old Burgess is on an eight-game hitting streak, and yesterday against Lexington (Astros) he turned in his second three-hit game in three days, going 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs as the Suns won 7-2.

Prospect Nuggets

The Greensboro (Marlins) lineup got a boost with the return of third baseman Matt Dominguez off the DL. Dominguez went 0-for-3 in his season debut on Tuesday, but bounced back with a 3-for-4 effort against Lakewood (Phillies) yesterday … Charleston (Yankees) DH Austin Romine went 1-for-3 with a double in his return from the DL … Greenville (Red Sox) lefthander Felix Doubront (6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO) didn’t get any offensive support and suffered just his second loss of the season as the Drive dropped a 5-2 decision against Charleston … The best pitching matchup of the night was in Hickory (Pirates) where Duke Welker (5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) outdueled Columbus’ (Rays) Alex Cobb (6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO). Welker notched his first win in five starts for the Crawdads ,,, Savannah (Mets) righthander Maikel Cleto had easily the best outing of his young career. The 19-year-old Dominican native pitched a complete game, three-hit shutout against Augusta (Giants). He struck out two, walked one and picked up his first win of the season.

Low A Dish: Chacin, Mitchell Have Great Nights

Jhoulys Chacin had another outstanding outing, Matt Mitchell had his best outing of the year, and Edward Paredes flirted with a no-hitter.

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Few prospects in the Sally League look like they’re on their way to a better breakout season than Asheville (Rockies) righthander Jhoulys Chacin. Chacin has won his last six decisions and is at or near the top of SAL pitching leaderboards in several important categories: second in ERA, second in strikeouts, tied for first in wins and first in innings pitched. Chacin threw another gem yesterday against Rome (Braves), going eight innings, allowing two runs (one earned), on three hits, with three walks and 10 strikeouts. Chacin struck out Braves top prospect Jason Heyward twice, one of which came in the top of the eighth when Chacin caught Heyward looking to punctuate his afternoon. Even though Rome is one of the SAL’s weaker offensive clubs, you have to give Chacin some extra credit considering he’s posted a 1.70 ERA despite pitching half his games in Asheville, which is easily the SAL’s most hitter-friendly environment.

Low A Dish: McAllister Halts Drive

Zach McAllister dominated Greenville, Engel Beltre bounced back from a tough night, and Angel Villalona went deep again.

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Outside of one rough outing at hitter-friendly Asheville, Charleston (Yankees) righthander Zach McAllister has been nearly unbeatable. Just ask the Greenville Drive (Red Sox), against whom McAllister has made each of his last two starts. He tossed seven shutout innings against the Drive last Thursday and was just as dominant in the rematch last night. McAllister went eight innings, allowed one run on six hits, struck out six and walked none. His K-BB ratio for the year now stands at 49-7 in 57 innings pitched, while he ran his record to 6-2 and dropped his ERA to 2.05.

Low A Dish: Revere, Tejeda Have Big Nights

Ben Revere and Oscar Tejeda are proving arriving late isn’t always a bad thing, Devin Mesoraco went deep for the first time, Jason Heyward keeps hitting, and Cole Rohrbough made his 2008 debut.

Midwest League

Prospect Of The Day

This may sound like a broken record, but Ben Revere had another three hits yesterday, his sixth straight multi-hit game. The Beloit (Twins) center fielder went 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs as the Snappers overcame a late 5-2 deficit to knock off first-place Clinton (Rangers) 6-5. Revere’s RBIs came on a groundout in the third and a two-out single in the eighth that made the score 5-3. The only blight on Revere’s night was some misadventures on the bases, as he was doubled off 2nd on a fly ball in the sixth and was caught stealing 2nd in the eighth after his RBI single. Revere’s line now stands at .432/.483/.568 after 81 at-bats.

Low A Dish: Big V’s Big Night

Angel Villalona carved up Columbus, Neftali Feliz outdueled Jordan Walden, and a couple of lefty prospects in the SAL had tough nights.

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Angel Villalona might be figuring out this full-season thing, in which case, SAL pitchers beware. Last night against Columbus (Rays), the big Augusta (Giants) first baseman finished a triple short of the cycle–probably not the last time that’ll happen–after going 4-for-5 with a double, his fifth home run of year and four RBIs as the GreenJackets cruised to a 13-2 victory. After hitting only .213/.273//325 in April, the top prospect in the Giants organization has hits in eight of his last nine games, with four home runs over that span. He’s raised his season line to .236/.289/.414 in the process.

Prospect Nuggets

On the wrong end of a couple of Villalona’s hits was Columbus lefthander Glenn Gibson (5.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 0 SO), who took the loss to fall to 1-6 on the year … Rome (Braves) lefthander Jeff Locke also struggled again, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out seven but also walked five. Locke fell to 1-5 as the last-place Braves continued to struggle, losing their sixth straight … Right fielder Jason Heyward continues to be one of the few bright spots for Rome. He went 2-for-4 yesterday … Charleston (Yankees) catcher Jesus Montero went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs as the RiverDogs scored a big 3-1 win over Asheville (Rockies) in a battle between the SAL’s top two teams … Three Charleston pitchers (Noel Castillo, Chace Vacek, and Jonathan Ortiz) combined to throw a one-hitter in that game … Greenville (Red Sox) center fielder Ryan Kalish came off the bench in the fourth against Savannah (Mets) and proceeded to go 3-for-4 with a double and a triple … Indians righthander Jake Westbrook made a rehab start for Lake County (Indians) against Lexington (Astros). He gave up one run over 3 2/3 innings and was followed on the mound by righthander Ryan Miller, who stayed hot by finishing the game, tossing 5 2/3 shutout innings, allowing only four hits, one walk, and striking out eight. Miller improved to 7-0 on the season.

Low A Dish: McAllister Back On Track

Zach McAllister came back strong after a rough outing, Justin Jackson ended a slump, and Devin Mesoraco hasn’t gotten off to the kind of start anyone envisioned.

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Charleston (Yankees) righthander Zach McAllister was roughed up in his last outing at the hitter-friendly environment of Asheville’s McCormick Field, but he bounced back with a strong outing last night as the RiverDogs won 2-1 and salvaged a split of their four-game series with Greenville (Red Sox). McAllister worked seven shutout innings, gave up seven hits, no walks, and struck out 11. He improved his record to 5-2 and lowered his ERA to 2.27.

Prospect Nuggets

Greenville center fielder Ryan Kalish went 2-for-4, with both hits coming against McAllister … The RiverDogs won that game despite being held to just three hits of their own by Greenville pitchers Chris Province and Bryce Cox … Hagerstown (Nationals) right fielder Michael Burgess went 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI against Lexington (Astros) … Lexington center fielder Collin DeLome hit his eighth home run of the year … Greensboro (Marlins) left fielder Tom Hickman went 3-for-3 with two home runs as the Grasshoppers came from behind to beat Lakewood (Philles) 8-5.
