Austin Romine had four hits, David Bromberg struck out 10 and Mike Moustakas and Mike Stanton each went deep.
South Atlantic League
Prospect Of The Day
Charleston (Yankees) DH Austin Romine went 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored as the RiverDogs pounded out a 10-3 win over Delmarva (Orioles). Romine’s season hasn’t been as spectacular as that of his tag-team partner behind the plate, Jesus Montero, but the 19-year-old has been very capable in his own right, putting up a line of .284/.322/.404 on the year. Prospect Of The Day
Oregon State product–and former BA College Preview cover boy–Mike Stutes has shaken off a disappointing college season by decimating Sally League hitters. The Lakewood (Phillies) righthander, who was Philadelphia’s 11th-round pick, tossed seven shutout innings against Savannah (Mets) last night and allowed only one hit and three walks while striking out six. Stutes has won all four of his starts for the BlueClaws since being promoted from short-season Williamsport, allowing a mere one run and eight hits in 26 innings. [...] Continue Reading »
Shooter Hunt and Scott Barnes each got their first pro wins, Mike Stanton hit two more bombs and Jarrod Parker had another strong performance.
South Atlantic League
Prospect Of The Day
Tough call today, but we’ll give the nod to Augusta (Giants) lefthander Scott Barnes, the Giants’ 2008 eighth-round pick from St. John’s, who picked up his first professional win by shutting down West Virginia (Brewers), one of the SAL’s best offensive clubs. Barnes, who was making his third start for the GreenJackets, pitched seven shutout innings and allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out six. [...] Continue Reading »
Matt Mitchell led another strong performance by Burlington’s pitching staff, Everth Cabrera had a loud night with his bat rather than his legs and Mike Stanton went deep for the 30th time.
South Atlantic League
Prospect Of The Day
Asheville (Rockies) second baseman Everth Cabrera went 4-for-5 in a 6-1 Tourists win over Lexington (Astros). Cabrera, who leads the minors in steals with 68, let his bat do the talking yesterday, smacking his fifth home run of the year and adding his 22nd double to go with it, putting his season line at .287/.362/.396 in 432 at-bats. Danny Duffy pitched six innings in a combined no-hitter, Cody Johnson went deep twice and Nick Noonan had a big night as well.
South Atlantic League
Prospect Of The Day
Rome (Braves) left fielder Cody Johnson hit two home runs, including a grand slam in the second inning, as the Braves slugged out a 12-9 win over Charleston (Yankees). Johnson went 2-for-5 and drove in six on the night, and he became the third Sally Leaguer to reach the 20-homer plateau this year. He also struck out twice, putting him at 160 whiffs in 397 at-bats for the year. [...] Continue Reading »

Prospect Of The Day
Not a whole lot to choose from with only four Sally League games last night, but Rome (Braves) lefthander Jeff Locke worked six shutout innings against Charleston (Yankees), picking up his fifth win of the year as the Braves pulled out a 1-0 win. Locke was able to spread out five hits and two walks for the Charleston offense while striking out five to improve his mark to 5-10, 4.16. [...] Continue Reading »
Mike Stanton had a monster evening, Cole Rohrbough flirted with a no-hitter and Mike Moustakas took over the Midwest League’s home run lead.
South Atlantic League
Prospect Of The Day
The Lakewood BlueClaws did everything they could not to let Mike Stanton beat them, but in the end, he did anyway. Greensboro (Marlins) needed 15-innings to knock off Lakewood (Phillies) 8-7, and it was Stanton who put a cap on the proceedings. He went 4-for-5 on the night and drew three walks, two of them intentional during the extra frames. Stanton reached base in seven straight plate appearances after a popping up in the first inning. After having been walked intentionally in his two previous at-bats when there were men on and first base was open, Stanton led off the bottom of the 15th against BlueClaws lefty Moises Melendez and took him deep for his SAL-leading 29th home run of the season. Prospect Of The Day
We’ll go a little off the board today and give POTD honors to Charleston (Yankees) third baseman Bradley Suttle. He’s one of the league’s better defenders over at the hot corner, but Suttle’s not having a bad year at the plate either with a line of .288/.356/.498 in 271 at-bats. He had a huge night yesterday in Charleston’s 15-0 rout of Greenville (Red Sox), going 3-for-5 with a triple, a home run and two RBIs. [...] Continue Reading »
Madison Bumgarner keeps sailing along, Jesus Montero has big night himself and Trevor Reckling shined for Cedar Rapids.
South Atlantic League
Prospect Of The Day
There isn’t much more we can say about Madison Bumgarner’s season at this point, other than to start recycling the same old superlatives. The Augusta (Giants) lefthander turned in what has become a pretty standard outing for him, throwing seven shutout innings against Savannah (Mets), allowing only four hits, no walks and striking out nine. Over his last four starts, the only runs Bumgarner has allowed came on July 22 against Lake County when he had a shutout through seven and tried to come back for the eighth, only to give up three runs. He hasn’t allowed a run in 14 innings since. The victory improves him to 11-3, 1.70 for the year. [...] Continue Reading »
Thursday’s action was dominated by pitching. Felix Doubrount topped Cole Rohrbough, while Shooter Hunt has kept mowing down opposing hitters since arriving in Beloit.
South Atlantic League
Prospect Of The Day
Greenville (Red Sox) lefthander Felix Doubront was the best of the bunch on the Sally League side. Doubront outdueled Rome’s (Braves) Cole Rohrbough in working six shutout innings, allowing just two hits, no walks and striking out eight as the Drive posted a 3-0 win. This was the fourth straight start in which Doubront allowed two runs or fewer, and he picked up his SAL-leading 12th win of the year, putting his mark at 12-6, 3.22.
Prospect Nuggets
Rohrbough wasn’t bad himself. The Rome lefthander struck out 11 over six innings, but did give up three runs on five hits along the way. He took the loss and fell to 2-4, 5.72 … [...] Continue Reading »
Brandon Waring and Neftali Soto each had monster nights, Jesus Montero went deep and Jarrod Parker earned his 10th victory.
South Atlantic League
Prospect Of The Day
Jesus Montero wins today’s POTD honors after going 2-for-4 with his 11th home run and two RBIs as Charleston’s (Yankees) DH in a 6-5 win over Asheville (Rockies). The homer was a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh inning off Asheville righthander Edgmer Escalona that put Charleston ahead 5-4 at the time. Asheville would later tie it in the ninth, only to lose on a walk-off home run by Austin Krum. [...] Continue Reading »

Prospect Of The Day
Although we try to spread the wealth with these POTD awards, we can’t look past low Class A home run leader Mike Stanton, who slugged two more long balls last night in Greensboro’s (Marlins) 6-1 win over Lake County (Indians). That gives him 26 for the year. He went 2-for-4 on the night, raising his line for the year to .275/.351/.569 in 360 at-bats. [...] Continue Reading »
Madison Bumgarner had a pretty normal night by his standards, Blake Beavan shut down Lansing’s talented lineup and Matt McSwain flirted with a no-no.
South Atlantic League
Prospect Of The Day
Monday was a fairly slow day for Sally League prospects, but the always dependable Madison Bumgarner probably would’ve won POTD honors on any day after another dominant performance last night. The Augusta (Giants) lefthander tossed seven shutout innings against Rome (Braves) to pick up his 10th win of the season, allowing only five hits, no walks and striking out six. Bumgarner improves to 10-3, 1.81 on the year, and his K-BB ratio stands at 116-18 in 109 innings. [...] Continue Reading »
Mike Stanton added to his SAL home run lead, Pete Kozma came through with some late inning heroics and Mike McCardell and Edward Paredes engaged in an old-fashioned pitcher’s duel.
South Atlantic League
Prospect Of The Day
Greensboro (Marlins) center fielder Mike Stanton doubled, homered and drove in three in an 8-1 win over Hagerstown (Nationals). He went 2-for-4 on the night. The home run was Stanton’s 24th of the season, extending his league lead to five over his nearest competition. Although Stanton plays in a very hitter-friendly ballpark, his lead can’t just be chalked up to his friendly confines, as 11 of his 24 long balls have come on the road.
Prospect Nuggets
Rome (Braves) first baseman Freddie Freeman went 2-for-3 and clubbed his 17th home run in a 3-0 win over Augusta (Giants) … Hickory (Pirates) righthander Duke Welker pitched six shutout innings against Charleston (Yankees). Welker allowed just two hits–both singles–three walks and struck out six. He also induced 10 groundouts and only three fly outs. The win was just his third of the year as he improved to 3-8, 4.34. Kane County (Athletics) second baseman Jemile Weeks hit his first professional home run in a 5-2 loss to Fort Wayne (Padres). Weeks finished the night 2-for-5 and extended his hitting streak to nine games while upping his line to .309/.457/.400 in 55 at-bats.
Prospect Nuggets
Weeks’ home run was the only run allowed by Fort Wayne starter Corey Kluber, who worked five innings and gave up six hits, no walks and struck out seven to pick up his first win in a Wizards uniform … Beloit (Twins) center fielder Ben Revere went 3-for-5 with a stolen base and two RBIs in a 4-3, 10-inning loss to South Bend (Diamondbacks) … [...] Continue Reading »
Bruce Billings no-hit Lakewood, Mike Moustakas had three hits and Jemile Weeks extended his hitting streak.
South Atlantic League
Prospect Of The Day
Not much of a contest for today’s honors. Asheville (Rockies) righthander Bruce Billings threw the SAL’s first no-hitter since 2005 in a 10-0 rout over Lakewood (Phillies). After issuing a two-out walk in the top of the first, Billings retired the next 23 hitters in a row before committing a fielding error himself that allowed a man to reach with one out in the ninth. Billings struck out eight and completed the game on 112 pitches. [...] Continue Reading »
Angel Villalona punctuated an eventful evening, Madison Bumgarner dominated for seven innings and Zach Britton won his 10th game.
South Atlantic League
Prospect Of The Day
It was a bit of an up-and-down night for Augusta (Giants) first baseman Angel Villalona, but it ended a high note. He went 2-for-5 on the night in the GreenJackets’ 5-4 win over Lake County (Indians). He doubled and later came around to score in the bottom of the sixth, but he also committed a critical fielding error in the top of the eighth that helped Lake County erase a 4-0 deficit and tie the game. The 17-year-old didn’t take long to redeem himself. With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Villalona launched a 2-0 pitch from Lake County’s Dallas Cawiezell over the left field wall, the first walk-off home run of his pro career.
"Earlier in the season if Villalona makes an error like that he may have not been able focus and concentrate enough to come back and redeem himself," Augusta manager Andy Skeels told the Augusta Chronicle. "These are the times that are turning points in a guy’s career. You can see the development taking place."
For the season, Villalona raised his line to .250/.299/.424 in 328 at-bats. [...] Continue Reading »
Devin Mesoraco went yard twice, Freddy Galvis had an memorable evening and Ben Revere is back over .400.
South Atlantic League
Prospect Of The Day
Lakewood (Phillies) shortstop Freddy Galvis is known much more for his glove than his bat, but he had the kind of night hitters dream about against Asheville (Rockies). Galvis went 5-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs in a 6-5, 10-inning win. His two-run double in the top of the second plated the first runs of the game, and in his final at-bat he of the night he came through with a two-out double in the top of the 10th. Joel Naughton followed Galvis with a single to drive in the winning run. [...] Continue Reading »
Austin Romine went yard twice, Justin Jackon stayed hot and Mike Stanton extended his lead in the SAL home run race.
South Atlantic League
Prospect Of The Day
Charleston (Yankees) DH Austin Romine found the cozy confines of Greensboro’s NewBridge Bank Park much to his liking in the RiverDogs’ series opener against the Grasshoppers. The 19-year-old 2007 second rounder went deep twice en route to a 4-for-4 evening, though it wasn’t enough to prevent an 8-7 loss. All six of Romine’s home runs on the year have come in the second half of the season. [...] Continue Reading »

Prospect Of The Day
Rome (Braves) first baseman Freddie Freeman stayed hot, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored in the Braves’ 10-6 win over Lexington (Astros). Freeman extended his hitting streak to 16 games.
Prospect Nuggets
Delmarva (Orioles) lefthander Zach Britton turned in a solid outing against Asheville (Rockies). Britton held the Tourists to one run (unearned) on two hits over six innings while walking none and striking out seven as the Shorebirds won 2-1 … Greenville (Red Sox) center fielder Che-Hsuan Lin went 2-for-3 and stole three bases in the Drive’s 6-5, 10-inning win over Lake County (Indians).
