Milwaukee has made its second major signing this year in the Dominican Republic, this time agreeing to terms with shortstop Santo Aybar.

Aybar, who turns 17 on Saturday, still has to pass his investigation into his age and identity for the signing to become official, according to Fernando Arango, the Brewers coordinator of Latin American scouting. The Brewers also signed Dominican right fielder Jose Pena for $400,000 on July 2, the first day of the international signing period.

A righthanded hitter from Bani, Aybar is around 6-foot-3, 170 pounds, with Arango comparing his frame and power potential to Juan Encarnacion. Though Aybar is currently a shortstop, several scouts have said they expect him to move either to third base or the outfield, and Arango said he expects Aybar to fit in at third or second base.

Mickolio, everyone’s favorite 6-foot-9 reliever from Utah Valley State, quietly was putting up a fine season with Triple-A Norfolk, posting a 3.35 ERA in 30 games to go with a 44-to-13 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Everything the 25-year-old throws is hard, with his fastball sitting at 93-97 mph with sink and his slider made even filthier by the fact that he throws from a low three-quarters slot and across his body. To righthanded batters, it looks like Mickolio is delivering the ball from third base. A total of 561 minor league players were declared free agents on Nov. 6. Major League Baseball and the players’ union negotiated a later minor league free agency declaration date as part of the 2006 Collective Bargaining Agreement. Prior to that, minor leaguers entered the free agent market about two weeks before the big leaguers, on or about Oct. 15. Now both groups are free to sign with teams at roughly the same time.

In addition to our usual detailed coverage, we have two new features to this year’s free agents list. First, we have included the last minor league classification with which each organization had each player assigned. And second, we have denoted with an asterisk (*) players who spent the entire season on the disabled list.

In case you’re wondering, Triple-A players constitute 56.7 percent of the players on this list, while Double-A players make up 25.5 percent. A-ball (11.6 percent) and short-season (6.2 percent) players make up the rest of the free agent pool.

Fresno’s Justin Leone took Scherzer deep, providing the only blemish on the righthander’s record.
