Jeff Larish kept on slugging, Homer Bailey struck out seven Tides in seven innings, Eulogio de la Cruz became the second prospect to tame Isotopes Field in two nights and Wade LeBlanc showed signs of improvement.
Check out yesterday’s Triple-A Dish.
INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
Toledo first baseman Jeff Larish (Tigers) does a lot of things right. He has tremendous raw power to all fields, which he used to lead the Eastern League in home runs and RBIs last season, but his unorthodox stance divides talent evaluators.
Stances, evaluations, scouting reports. . . . None of that means much of anything to Larish now. The 25-year-old slugger, a fifth-round pick from Arizona State in 2005, is batting .284/.370/.603 through 116 at-bats. And after his 2-for-5 game last night in which he homered (his ninth), doubled (eight) and drove in three runs (27), Larish moved to second place in the IL home run and RBI derbies.
Prospect Nuggets
Louisville RHP Homer Bailey (Reds) has steadily increased his pitch counts as April has turned to May. Last night he went seven innings and 112 pitches, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks. He struck out seven Norfolk batters . . . Durham CF Fernando Perez (Rays) was 2-for-4 with a double (fifth), a stolen base (11) and a caught stealing (four). Perez’s Durham teammate, RHP Mitch Talbot, contributed his second straight scoreless outing, this time going seven innings, striking out eight and allowing just four hits. His previous time out: 8 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 6 SO . . . Charlotte RHP Lance Broadway (White Sox) trimmed his ERA to 1.10 after going five shutout innings yesterday. He picked up the win, improving to 4-1, but it was his worst outing of the year (5 H, 4 BB, 4 SO). Of course, that’s a testament to how consistent he’s been . . . . Richmond experienced an Omar Infante (Braves) sighting. The utilityman broke his left hand in winter ball and is on a rehab assignment.
What To Watch For Today
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (4-28) continue their road trip in Toledo against the Mud Hens, the slugging-est team in the league. The Hens have connected for an IL-leading 48 home runs this season (Scranton is second with 29), and the Pigs’ pitchers have allowed 29, second-most in the league. It could be fun . . . Rochester RHP Philip Humber (Twins) starts for the Red Wings at Columbus (7 p.m.). He’s made three relief appearances (2 2/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 SO) since his last start.
PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
One night after Billy Buckner tossed eight shutout innings at Isotopes Field, another young pitcher nearly duplicated the feat. Albuquerque righthander Eulogio de la Cruz (Marlins) went seven without allowing a run, while striking out nine, walking one and allowing five hits.
The 24-year-old de la Cruz joined the Marlins organization in the Miguel Cabrera trade, and has struggled to a 4-1, 6.75 start with his new organization. He’s managed to keep the ball on the ground (2.71 G/F, 2 HR) in his six starts, but 16 walks and 37 hits in 28 innings have undermined his effort and obscured the positives.
Prospect Nuggets
Six innings, four runs, one walk, five strikeouts? Portland LHP Wade LeBlanc (Padres) will take it. After all, his composite line from his previous two starts was downright scary: 6 1/3 IP, 20 H, 15 R, 8 BB, 1 SO . . . Because he has 316 big league at-bats, Salt Lake 1B Kendry Morales (Angels) is no longer considered a prospect, but his two home runs yesterday (2-for-3, three runs) helped Salt Lake resume their winning ways. The Bees "fell" to 24-5 after dropping their first three games at Nashville . . . Memphis CF Colby Rasmus (Cardinals) went hitless in four at-bats, striking out three times. In his last 10 games, he’s batting .200 (6-for-30), but with a double, two homers, three steals and a BB-K mark of 5-5.
What To Watch For Today
The Bees welcome the Isotopes to Salt Lake, where they’re 10-1 on the season.
