Andrew McCutchen racks up three hits, Mike Aviles’ hit streak rolls to 13, Emilio Bonifacio keeps the singles coming and Landon Powell goes deep twice.
Check out yesterday’s Triple-A Dish.
INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
Indianapolis center fielder Andrew McCutchen (Pirates) played his way on to Prospect Hot Sheet with his performance yesterday: He went 3-for-4 with his sixth home run, two RBIs and a run scored. It wasn’t all good for the 21-year-old phenom, though, as he committed an error and registered his third caught stealing of the year.
For more on McCutchen, be sure to check out today’s Prospect Hot Sheet.
Prospect Nuggets
Buffalo 1B Jordan Brown (Indians) was placed on the disabled list with a left knee injury. The 24-year-old Brown, who won Carolina and Eastern league MVP honors the past two seasons, had cooled after a hot start in the IL. He was batting .271/.333/.385. Double-A Akron 1B Michael Aubrey, the club’s first-round pick in 2003, was called up to replace him . . . Toledo LF Brent Clevlen (Tigers) went 2-for-4 with a homer (his fourth) and a triple (his third), which brought his seasonal average to .284/.346/.526 with four homers. Perhaps the best outfield defender in the system, Clevlen has been held back by poor pitch recognition, and with 31 strikeouts in 25 games, that pattern seems to be holding . . . Rochester RHP Kevin Slowey (Twins) continued his rehab from the biceps tendinitis that knocked him out of his first start of the year. The defending IL ERA champion surrendered two solo home runs in five innings and struck out nine of the 20 batters he faced. Alarmingly, he walked two batters, which would have tied for his Red Wings season high last year.
What To Watch For Today
Can the IronPigs continue their hot streak? They’re undefeated so far in May after their 5-3 win at Columbus yesterday. Of course, they went 3-24 in April, and if they’re to win today, it’ll have to be against 21-year-old Columbus RHP Collin Balester (Nationals, 1-2, 4.24), who’s last two starts have been rocky—nine innings total, eight runs.
PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
Like the IL’s Andrew McCutchen, Omaha second baseman Mike Aviles (Royals) gets a nod in today’s Prospect Hot Sheet. The 27-year-old upped his hitting streak to 13 games after a 1-for-4 night in which he tripled, scored a run and drove in one. Aviles’ hitting streak hasn’t consisted solely of singles, either, as he’s batting .393/.414/.768 in that span.
Aviles was off to a fine start even before his hit streak, and he now ranks among the minor league leaders in extra-base hits (22, second), total bases (75, fifth), doubles (12, sixth), RBIs (24, 10th) and, my favorite, triples (5, second to Pete Orr).
You have to wonder, though, whether the Royals will give Aviles, who can play second or short, a chance. They’re committed to great-glove, no-hit shortstop Tony Pena at the major league level, and they traded a quality pitching prospect in Billy Buckner to obtain second baseman Alberto Callaspo in the offseason.
Prospect Nuggets
Tucson 2B Emilio Bonifacio (D’backs) was 2-for-5 yesterday, extending his hitting streak to seven games—and also extending to seven games his steak of games in which he’s collected two or more hits. He’s hitting .312/.362/.368 with nine stolen bases on the season . . . Pitchers love throwing to Sacramento C Landon Powell (Athletics), partly because he has one of the strongest throwing arms in the minors, but he showed off a different kind of power yesterday in connecting for two home runs. He was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs, bringing his averages to .213/.345/.617. Of his 10 hits this season, six are home runs and one is a double. The switch-hitting, 6-foot-3, 250-pound Powell played on consecutive days for the first time this season. He missed significant time in 2005 and again last season with serious knee injuries . . . Powell was caching RHP Rich Harden, in Sacramento on a rehab assignment. Harden struck out four in 3 2/3 innings, giving up a run on three hits . . . Nashville RHP Jeff Weaver (Brewers) began working his way in to shape, tossing five innings and striking out nine. He did serve up two home runs in this one, though.
What To Watch For Today
Mike Aviles goes for 14 in a row. Salt Lake tries to continue its winning ways. And Sacramento LHP Gio Gonzalez (A’s, 0-1, 3.91) will try to improve his pitch efficiency. He’s used 91, 94 and 96 pitches to get through five innings in his past three starts.
