Prospect Of The Day

Syracuse lefthander David Purcey (Blue Jays) had his fastball and curveball working last night as he carved up the IronPigs over eight innings. He improved to 3-1, 1.64 after striking out nine and allowing just two hits, no runs and one walk. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound lefty threw 72 of his 100 pitches for strikes and overtook Lehigh Valley’s starter, LHP J.A. Happ, for the IL strikeout lead (39).

For his part, Happ went seven scoreless innings, giving up a hit and four walks to go with five strikeouts. He’s remains winless, though, thanks to the Pigs’ 3-23 record.

Prospect Nuggets

No IL pitcher has exemplified workhorse quite like Charlotte RHP Lance Broadway (White Sox). He’s averaging 7.2 innings per start after last night’s handcuffing of Norfolk (8 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 SO, 1 HR). The 15th overall pick in 2005, Broadway has gone 3-1, 1.25 in 36 innings this season, and while he’s struck out just 19 batters, he’s been stingy with walks (eight) and home runs (three). Efficiency has been the name of Broadway’s game: He’s throwing strikes with 64 percent of his pitches and keeping the ball on the ground (2.37 G/F) . . . Broadway’s opponent yesterday, Norfolk RHP Radhames Liz (Orioles), threw six scoreless innings, striking out five and walking three. Liz’s ERA over his last two starts: 0.69. And over his first three: 7.98 . . . Toledo 2B Mike Hollimon (Tigers) had missed time this spring with a dislocated shoulder, but to this point the 25-year-old switch-hitter has kept the extra-base hits coming. With a double (his fourth) and a triple (his second) in four at-bats yesterday, Hollimon is batting .286/.342/.686 in 35 at-bats . . . Rochester LHP Brian Duensing (Twins) went six innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, and RHP Philip Humber pitched a scoreless inning of relief to collect his first win. He had compiled a 5.24 ERA over five previous starts . . . Richmond LHP Jo-Jo Reyes (Braves) was pulled after giving up two runs in two innings yesterday. The reason: Atlanta called him up to start Saturday in place of Chuck James.

What To Watch For Today

Power pitchers take the hill this afternoon in Louisville, where RHP Homer Bailey (Reds, 3-2, 1.95) takes on Toledo, and Rochester, where LHP Francisco Liriano (Twins, 0-0, 6.75) continues to make his way back from Tommy John surgery.

PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE

Prospect Of The Day

Tucson second baseman Emilio Bonifacio’s running game has slowed recently, but he sure has been rapping out the hits. With a 2-for-5 performance last night, he’s now collected two or more hits in five straight games. Still his Sidewinders lost, 2-1 to Round Rock, to fall to 6-20.

Over his last 10 games, he’s batted .353 (18-for-51) with a pair of doubles, three walks and 10 strikeouts. But after jumping out to an early lead in the minor league stolen base race (with nine), he’s nabbed just one in his last 10 games.

Tacoma sluggers C Jeff Clement and RF Wladimir Balentien (Mariners) were held out of the Rainiers’ lineup last night, leading to speculation that they may soon be called up to Seattle. The (Tacoma) News Tribune is all over it—here and here. And John Hickey of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer thinks a move is imminent . . . Oklahoma RHP Eric Hurley (Rangers) threw 113 pitches in a six-inning effort at Porltand. He gave up three runs on five hits and four walks, though he struck out five and gave up no home runs. What’s most notable about Hurley’s outing is that he endured 28 pitches in the second inning and 29 more in the third . . . Las Vegas 3B Andy LaRoche (Dodgers) was 0-for-3 in his first Triple-A game. He’s coming back after surgery to repair a ligament in his right thumb . . . Memphis C Bryan Anderson (Cardinals) was 0-for-3 in his Triple-A debut, though his Redbird teammate, CF Colby Rasmus, was 1-for-4 with two steals, two runs and a walk.

What To Watch For Today

Salt Lake got back on track yesterday, adjusting to life without SS Brandon Wood, and defeated Memphis 9-7 to improve to 22-2. The Bees send RHP Giancarlo Alvarado to the mound in Memphis today (noon).
