A pair of Yankees prospects playing for low Class A Charleston went on the disabled list on Wednesday, catcher Austin Romine and righthander Jairo Heredia.

Romine, the Yankees’ no. 22 prospect in the 2008 Prospect Handbook, left Tuesday’s game against Savannah in the eighth inning with what the team called a lower-body injury. Heredia last pitched on Sunday against Columbus, when he went 5 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on seven hits to earn his second victory of the season. His injury was classified as an upper-body injury and his DL status was made retroactive to April 21.

Although scouts considered Romine’s glove more advanced than his bat heading into last year’s draft, the Yankees believed in his offensive potential and made him their second round pick. So far this year, Romine had been proving the team may have been right, as he was hitting .351/.367/.439 in 15 games for Charleston while splitting time behind the plate with the Yankees’ top catching prospect, Jesus Montero. The team had established a system where Romine and Montero alternated between catching and DH’ing from one game to the next.

The Yankees signed Heredia out of the Dominican Republic in 2006 at the age of 16. He made his U.S. debut last year, going 2-2, 2.72 in 11 games (six starts) in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. Heredia, who features a low-90s fastball and a curveball with plus potential, had made four starts for the RiverDogs, going 2-0, 3.48. In 20 2/3 innings, he had allowed eight earned runs with a 22-7 K-BB ratio.
