Gronkiewicz, 29, turned in a typically-strong relief campaign, going 6-3, 2.41 with 83-10 K-BB in 74 2/3 innings in the Blue Jays system this season. Signed as a nondrafted free agent by the Indians from South Carolina in 2001, the 5-foot-10 Gronkiewicz has had to fight for every opportunity. He’s also been a middle reliever for Team USA the last two years, teams that won both the Olympic qualifying tournament in 2006 and the recent World Cup.

Chicago Cubs

The 30-year-old Smith, a member of the minor league free agent team, has posted a 4.59 ERA in 676 Triple-A innings. A fine center fielder, Torres, 29, batted .292/.363/.484 in the Tigers system in 2007.

Adkins was the other guy in the trade that sent Heath Bell from Mets purgatory to the forefront of the Padres bullpen. San Diego shipped Adkins and Ben Johnson to New York for Bell and Royce Ring. Bell, of course, led all big league relievers in innings (93 2/3) and strikeouts (102). Tatum impressed scouts with his improved bat and excellent catch-and-throw skills in the Arizona Fall League.

Acquired just this month as the player to be named in the trade for righthander Roman Colon, Christensen was excised from the big league roster to get the Tigers down to 40.

Knott, 29, has carved out a career as a minor league slugger, hitting .270/.354/.515 in 477 Triple-A games in the Padres and Orioles systems. He signed as a nondrafted free agent from Mississippi State in 2001.

Just 26 and a converted catcher drafted in the fifth round from Miami (Ohio) in 2001, Knoedler has hit .273/.338/.420 in 245 Triple-A games for the Giants. He was one of the more attractive minor league free agents available. A fine defensive first baseman and lefty batter, Rogowski has hit .259/.346/.418 in 264 Triple-A games for the White Sox. He has some corner outfield experience, too, so he could make it as an extra guy.

A 44th-round pick of the Expos from Kutztown (Pa.) State in 1998, Chiavacci, 30, has posted a 4.38 ERA in 101 Triple-A games in the Expos, Pirates and Tigers systems. Watson, himself an Expos draft pick in the ninth round of 1999, authored a 43-game hitting streak this season, setting the new International League standard. Still just 26, the lefty-hitting Watson offers little power but has batted .312/.352/.371 in 393 Triple-A games.
