A second-round pick from UCLA in June, the 6-foot-6, 220-pound Rustich went 2-0, 2.13 with 11-1 K-BB in 13 innings for short-season Brooklyn. He’ll be on the periphery of the Mets’ big league bullpen plans next season, along with fellow college relievers Joe Smith (’06, third round) and Eddie Kunz (’07, supplemental first), if he continues to pitch well in the HWB and in spring training.
New York Yankees
Signed: RHP Eladio Rodriguez
Released: 2B Gabe Lopez
Assigned to Arizona Fall League: RHP Eric Wordekemper
Philadelphia Phillies
Signed: RHP Jason Anderson, RHP John Trujillo, LHP R.J. Swindle, OF Mike Spidale
Swindle is a member of Canada’s 2007 World Cup roster.
San Diego Padres
Signed: RHP Edwin Moreno
Seattle Mariners
Signed: SS Eriberto Menchaca
Texas Rangers
Outrighted off 40-man roster: C Guillermo Quiroz
Granted free agency: RHP Mike Wood, C Guillermo Quiroz
Most, if not all, of the sheen has rubbed off Quiroz, who was once viewed as the Blue Jays’ catcher of the future after his breakout 2003 when he hit .282/.360/.518 in Double-A at age 21. In 780 Triple-A at-bats since, Quiroz, still just 25, has hit .254/.313/.413 as a member of the Blue Jays, Mariners and Rangers organizations.
Toronto Blue Jays
Signed: OF Chris Demons
Demons, who ranked as the No. 10 prospect in the independent leagues, offers plus-plus speed and can run from home to first in 3.8 seconds without even trying. The downside: The lefthanded batter managed just .252/.363/.382 for Albany and Anderson of the South Coast League.
Washington Nationals
Released: 1B Logan Sorensen
Outrighted off 40-man roster: LHP Micah Bowie, OF Alex Escobar
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Terrence Engles
Granted free agency: RHP Jason Simontacchi, LHP Mike Bacsik, LHP Micah Bowie, OF Alex Escobar
Assigned to Arizona Fall League: RHP Adam Carr
Rookie lefthander Matt Chico led the Nationals with 31 starts and 167 innings. Bascik was third in both categories, at 20 and 118. Simontaccchi (13 stats) and Bowie (eight) got extended looks after injuries deprived Washington of John Patterson and Jerome Williams. But because Bascik, Simontacchi and Bowie were all comfortably below average, the Nats may not miss them if they depart.
