Yorman Bazardo–who has been outstanding since the Mariners designated him for assignment after signing Jeff Weaver–and Francisco Butto were two of the main reasons Venezuela was able to put away Puerto Rico on Tuesday and hand the Caribbean Series title to the Dominican Republic.

Bazardo (and we’ll have a scout’s view on him coming soon), was impressive, flashing a low 90s four-seamer and a hard curveball with good late life, looks like he’s approaching this Series as a showcase since being removed from the Mariners’ 40-man roster.

Butto was a little more enigmatic, however, coming in during the eighth inning and throwing 95% sliders . . . he used his fastball only four times–and that topped out at 95 mph.

“It was just odd to me,” a scout from a National League club said. “It was all sliders, and they were all very good–late-break with good depth. But he was on every fastball–the delivery, the command were all there.

“I just didn’t expect to see that many sliders.”

That was the plan, however, at least during that inning. Butto altered his attack in the ninth, flashing a curve and a couple changeups to go along with a fastball that sat anywhere from 93-95.

“At that point, we really needed to have him show a different look,” Venezuela manager Buddy Bailey said. “He’d used his slider enough, and knew it was time to mix it up some.”
