Pirates’ Cunnningham Done For ‘09

The Pirates asked Jarek Cunningham to come to camp early this year to get him a head start at his new position. But he’ll have to wait until 2010 to start his first full season after tearing the ACL in his left knee during a drill on Saturday, according to MLB.com.

Cunningham, 19, will miss the entire 2009 season after hitting .318/.387/.507 in 43 games in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League last summer. An 18th-round pick out of Mount Spokane (Wash.) High, Cunningham signed for an above-slot $100,000 bonus. He played mostly at third base and shortstop last year, but the Pirates were expected to move him to second base this year.

That stinks…and I’m not even a Pirates fan. Their system needs all the help it can get. Why couldn’t have Littlefield torn his ACL while he was running towards Daniel Moskos with a contract and pen in his hands?

Wow, bad luck. The reason he dropped to the 18th round in the first place was because of an injury keeping him from playing baseball his senior year. I drafted him in our dynasty league, so I was hoping for a steady rise through the minors. Hopefully this doesn’t label him as injury-prone, or move him from shortstop in the long run.

At least is wasn’t from a bad front office decision like Jason Kubel blowing out three knee ligaments in the 1st inning of his 1st AFL game a couple years ago, when he should not have been sent their in the 1st place. Here’s to a speedy rehab for Jarek.
