Minor League Transactions

This week’s installment considers all transactions reported by MLB between Nov. 18-20. The previous installment is available here. The next transactions will be published online next week, after the Thanksgiving holiday.

For more transactions fun, see our rundown of 40-man roster additions and our minor league free agents listing.

Arizona Diamondbacks
Added to 40-man roster:
RHP Jose Marte, RHP Kyler Newby, RHP Cesar Valdez, LHP Leyson Septimo, LHP Clay Zavada, SS Pedro Ciriaco

Zavada was the top-ranked player on BA’s independent ball prospects list among players who signed with a major league organization.

Atlanta Braves
Voluntarily retired:
2B Paul Bennett
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Stephen Marek, RHP Todd Redmond, 3B Diory Hernandez

Baltimore Orioles
Signed:
RHP Brad Hennessey

Boston Red Sox
Signed:
OF Paul McAnulty
Released: RHP Felipe Garcia, RHP Joseph Guerra, RHP Manuel Jimenez, RHP Jorge Rodriguez, 1B Ricardo Burgos, SS Chih-Hsiang Huang
Added to 40-man roster: LHP Felix Doubront, LHP Hunter Jones, C Mark Wagner

The Padres’ 12th-round pick out of Long Beach State in 2002, McAnulty was signed by Padres area scout Jason McLeod, who has since become Boston’s scouting director. McAnulty has proven himself at the Triple-A level, batting .310/.391/.516 in 279 games for Portland over the past four seasons. It’s been a different story in the big leagues for the soon-to-be 28-year-old, though, as he managed just .207/.341/.341 for San Diego in the first half of 2008.

Chicago Cubs
Added to 40-man roster:
RHP Mitch Atkins, RHP Justin Berg, RHP Marcos Mateo

Chicago White Sox
Added to 40-man roster:
RHP Jon Link, RHP Jhonny Nunez, RHP Clevelan Santeliz, 1B Brandon Allen

Houston Astros
Released:
RHP Raymar Diaz, RHP David Dinelli, RHP Jacob Leonhardt, RHP David Miller, RHP Luis Pardo, C Kevin Carkeek, 2B Greg Buchanan, SS Bryan Brown, SS Tim Torres, OF Cesar Quintero, OF Orlando Rosales
Added to 40-man roster: 2B Drew Sutton, SS Tommy Manzella, OF Brian Bogusevic

The Astros’ lamentable 2007 draft went from bad to worse when Houston cut Dinelli, its sixth-round pick form Sierra (Calif.) JC, after he compiled a 7.26 ERA in 53 pro innings, all at the short-season level. Making it worse still, he was the second player they signed from that draft. The Astros didn’t have a first- or second-round pick, and they failed to sign either their third- or fourth-rounder.

Kansas City Royals
Signed:
LHP Carlos Sencion, SS Luis Hernandez
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Henry Barrera
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Luke Hudson, LHP Josh Newman

Royals GM Dayton Moore has a not-so-secret weakness for Braves cast-offs, with Sencion and Hernandez being the latest two acquisition with Atlanta ties. Both came to Kansas City via the minor league free agent market. A 24-year-old Dominican, Sencion might turn out to be a worthwhile gamble because he’s a 6-foot-4 lefty who has struck out more than a man per inning at every stop until a rough Double-A stint last season. (Plus he first emerged in the 2006 Appalachian League, and I have a soft spot for minor leaguers who do so.) Hernandez, 24, has none of the sheen of the unknown—he’s a slick fielder and career .245/.289/.316 hitter in the minors. The biggest difference between him and Tony Pena Jr. is that Hernandez is a switch-hitter.

Other players developed by the Braves on the Royals’ 40-man roster: righthanders Jairo Cuevas (October waiver claim) and Kyle Davies (Octavio Dotel trade, July 2007), catcher Brayan Pena (May waiver claim) and Pena Jr. (Erik Cordier trade, March 2007).

Los Angeles Dodgers
Signed:
RHP Kieran Mattison, 2B Luis Maza
Placed on restricted list: RHP Chales Dasni, RHP Given Kutz
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Travis Schlichting, LHP Brent Leach, OF Jaime Hoffmann

Milwaukee Brewers
Added to 40-man roster:
RHP Omar Aguilar, RHP Alex Periard, RHP Mark Rogers, RHP Cody Scarpetta

Minnesota Twins
Added to 40-man roster:
RHP Anthony Swarzak, LHP Brian Duensing, C Drew Butera, C Wilson Ramos, 2B Steve Tolleson, 3B Luke Hughes, 3B Trevor Plouffe, 3B Deibinson Romero

New York Mets
Signed:
C Rene Rivera, 2B Andy Green
Added to 40-man roster: 1B Mike Carp

New York Yankees
Released:
RHP Luke Trubee, C Larry Day, C Jeff Nutt, 1B Ben Jones, SS Ryan Wilkes
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Anthony Claggett, RHP Christian Garcia, RHP Steven Jackson, LHP Michael Dunn
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Luke Trubee, LHP Kai Liu, C Larry Day, 1B Ben Jones, SS Ryan Wilkes, OF Michael Jones

Oakland Athletics
Signed:
RHP Jon Hunton
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Ryan Webb
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Angel Garcia

Hunton, a 6-foot-9 righthander, was drafted four times from 2001 to 2004, by the Marlins (28th round), the Nationals (39th), the Nationals again (24th) and finally the Cubs (11th). He spent three seasons in the Cubs organization, posting a 4.30 ERA for high Class A Daytona in 2006 before being released the following spring and going the indy route. Hunton, 26, excelled as Fort Worth’s (American Association) closer in 2008, collecting 23 saves to go with a 0.81 ERA and 71-18 K-BB in 56 innings.

Philadelphia Phillies
Signed:
C John Suomi, 1B Andy Tracy, 3B Mike Cervenak
Traded: OF Greg Golson to Rangers for OF John Mayberry Jr.
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Carlos Carrasco, RHP Drew Naylor, LHP Sergio Escalona, C Joel Naughton, OF John Mayberry Jr.

Pittsburgh Pirates
Signed:
1B Brett Bartles
Released: RHP Derek Antelo
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Jeff Sues, RHP Ronald Uviedo, C Steven Lerud, 3B Neil Walker, OF Jose Tabata

St. Louis Cardinals
Added to 40-man roster:
RHP Matt Scherer, SS Tyler Greene
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Mike Parisi

San Diego Padres
Released:
RHP Josh Davies, C Clinton Naylor, 1B Tim Atherton
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Matt Bush, RHP Cesar Carrillo, RHP Jackson Quezada, LHP Cesar Ramos, C Jose Lobaton, OF Luis Durango

San Francisco Giants
Signed:
3B Jesus Guzman
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Waldis Joaquin, RHP Joseph Martinez, RHP Henry Sosa, LHP Jesse English

Guzman torched the Cal League in 2007, batting .301/.370/.539 in 518 at-bats as a Mariners farmhand. But he skipped town as a minor league free agent, signing with the Athletics for 2008. He turned in an even better 2008 campaign, batting .364/.419/.560 and winning the Texas League’s batting title. Oakland tried to re-sign him on the free agent market, but the Giants intervened.

Seattle Mariners
Signed:
OF Mel Stocker
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Gaby Hernandez, RHP Steve Kahn, RHP Marwin Vega, OF Greg Halman
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Luis Munoz, RHP Tracy Thorpe

Like recent signee Steve Moss, Stocker has roots in the Brewers organization, the previous employer of new Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik. The Mariners cleared 40-man roster room by outrighting a pair of 2008 waiver claims in Munoz (Pirates, July) and Thorpe (Blue Jays, May). Hernandez, Kahn and Halman are familiar names to Mariners fans, but 22-year-old Double-A reliever Vega might be a bit more mysterious. The Colombia native has a quick arm and throws a live 91-93 mph fastball with an average breaking ball and changeup.

Tampa Bay Rays
Added to 40-man roster:
RHP Wade Davis, RHP Dale Thayer, LHP Jake McGee

Texas Rangers
Signed:
RHP Elizardo Ramirez
Traded: OF John Mayberry Jr. to Phillies for OF Greg Golson
Reinstated from DL: RHP Daniel Sattler

Toronto Blue Jays
Signed:
RHP Rick Bauer, OF Wayne Lydon
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Robert Ray, LHP Luis Perez, LHP Ricky Romero
Removed from 40-man roster: SS Angel Sanchez

Washington Nationals
Signed:
RHP Preston Larrison, RHP Dan Leatherman, RHP Ryan Wagner, 1B Brad Eldred, OF Jemel Spearman

The 28-year-old Larrison is the pick to click in this group. A Tigers’ second-round selection in 2001, he’s pitched in 100 Triple-A games and racked up a solid 3.49 ERA and just 84 strikeouts to go with 57 walks in 134 innings. However, he’s given up just seven home runs in that time, as he’s got one of the better—if not the best—sinkers on the market. His groundout-to-airout ratios in the past two seasons: 2.7 (Buffalo, ‘08), 3.0 (Toledo, ‘08), 3.0 (Toledo, ‘07). Yes, the double play will always be in the back of opposing managers’ minds.

Texas keeps trading away talent especially pitchers.
They need to trade for young pitchers, or change their ballpark.
