This week’s installment considers all transactions reported by MLB between Oct. 25-31. The previous installment is available here.
Atlanta Braves
Signed: RHP Jerome Gamble
Released: 2B Jonathan Schuerholz
Assigned to Arizona Fall League: OF Matt Young
The Braves cut ties with Schuerholz, son of former club GM and current president John Schuerholz. The 28-year-old infielder did not play in 2008, but he appeared to stall at Triple-A from 2005 to 2007, batting .188/.262/.253 in 211 games for Richmond.
Baltimore Orioles
Signed: LHP Ryan Rodriguez, C Steve Torrealba
Boston Red Sox
Granted free agency: SS Gil Velazquez
Chicago Cubs
Released: RHP Israel Camacaro, 2B Elvis Lara
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Billy Petrick
Placed on restricted list: OF Clark Hardman
Reinstated from inactive list: OF Clark Hardman
Chicago White Sox
Signed: RHP Matt Davis, OF Miguel Negron
Released: RHP Chad Dawson, RHP Po-Yu Lin
Cincinnati Reds
Signed: RHP Jerry Gil, C Chris Kroski
Cleveland Indians
Signed: C Damaso Espino, SS Andy Cannizaro
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Brian Slocum
Colorado Rockies
Granted free agency: LHP Cedrick Bowers
Removed from 40-man roster: LHP Cedrick Bowers
Bowers improbably made his big league debut in 2008 at the age of 30. He gave up 10 runs in 6 2/3 innings, and lefthanded batters went 4-for-7 against him (no extra-base hits or walks allowed), so he’ll have to prove himself with whichever team brings him to spring training. A fourth-round pick by Tampa Bay out of high school in 1996, Bowers made it to Triple-A in 2000, and there he stayed (winning two International League titles with Durham in ‘02 and ‘03) until March 2004, when he signed with Yokohama of Japan’s Central League. After two years in Japan, he spent two more years in Korea before the Rockies signed him to a minor league deal last January.
Detroit Tigers
Signed: RHP Pat Stanley (Newark (Atlantic)), LHP Daniel Christensen
Granted free agency: C Dane Sardinha
Removed from 40-man roster: C Dane Sardinha
The 25-year-old Stanley, who fanned 151 in 140 Atlantic League innings in 2008, is just the latest signing in the Tigers’ indy league exploits. The Rockies made him a 16th-round pick in 2004 out of Pace (N.Y.), but Colorado cut him during spring training 2006. Stanley spent two years in the Frontier League, playing for Washington, before joining Newark in 2008.
Houston Astros
Added to 40-man roster: LHP Polin Trinidad
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Paul Estrada
Trinidad, who will be 24 next season, has proven to be a durable strike-thrower for the Astros. He went a composite 10-7, 3.14 in 2008, with 109 strikeouts and 32 walks in 169 combined innings at high Class A and Double-A. The ‘08 Futures Gamer may not be a hard-thrower, but he shows an advanced feel for his offspeed stuff. The Astros signed Trinidad out of the Dominican Republic in 2002.
Kansas City Royals
Signed: RHP Matt Wright
Released: OF Neder Severino
Los Angeles Angels
Signed: OF Patrick Breen (Orange County (Golden))
An Anaheim native, Breen spent a year in the Golden League after being released by the Rays in spring training. Tampa Bay drafted him in the 21st round of the 2004 draft out of Houston.
Milwaukee Brewers
Signed: LHP Lindsay Gulin
Minnesota Twins
Signed: LHP Ben Julianel
Released: RHP Wilmer Guanchez, RHP Lee Martin, RHP Khol Nanney, LHP Michael Mopas, 2B Eric Santiago
Added to 40-man roster RHP Armando Gabino
New York Mets
Released: 1B Olmedo Saenz
New York Yankees
Added to 40-man roster RHP Eric Hacker, LHP Wilkins de la Rossa
De la Rossa, 23, flamed out as an outfielder but he’s found new life on the mound. He converted to a lefthanded pitcher in 2007. And after reaching high Class A and going 9-4, 2.11 with 125 strikeouts in 107 innings this season, the decision to add him to the 40-man roster was a no-brainer. De la Rossa’s fastball and breaking ball are advanced enough to suggest a lefty reliever’s profile.
Oakland Athletics
Signed: C Jed Morris, OF Archie Gilbert
Philadelphia Phillies
Signed: RHP Pete Sikaras
Reinstated from DL: RHP Gerard Breslin, RHP Nathaniel James, C Francisco Murillo
Reinstate from inactive list: RHP Heitor Correa
Pittsburgh Pirates
Signed: RHP Yoslan Herrera, RHP Josh Hill, C Miguel Perez
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Ronald Belisario, RHP John Van Benschoten
Seattle Mariners
Signed: RHP Rich Dorman
Released: RHP Robbie Dominguez, RHP Marquis Pettis, LHP Brent Gaphardt, LHP Steve Uhlmansiek, LHP Michael Wagner, 1B Brandon Fromm, 1B Manelik Pimentel, 3B James Davenport
Texas Rangers
Signed: RHP Jose Diaz, RHP Adalberto Flores, RHP Alfredo Gonzalez, LHP A.J. Murray, C Kevin Richardson
Toronto Blue Jays
Signed: RHP Orlando Roman, LHP Adam Loewen
Washington Nationals
Signed: RHP Steve Schmoll, RHP Zach Segovia, OF Jorge Padilla
Granted free agency: RHP Ryan Wagner, 2B Pete Orr
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Ryan Wagner, 2B Pete Orr

MLB.com’s Free Agent Tracker is listing a LOT of players as minor league free agents. However, they listed some players who, as of now, are still on 40-man rosters (i.e., Nelson Cruz, Brian Barden, etc.), so take that list with a grain of salt.

“The Braves cut ties with Schuerholz, son of former club GM and current president John Schuerholz.”
Sloppy reporting… The younger Schuerholz was the Braves infield instructor this fall in the Instructional League… that’s hardly “cutting ties.”
