Prospect of the Day
As a 6-foot-5, switch-hitting catcher that can hit for average and power, Matt Wieters (Orioles) is nearly a perfect prospect. The fifth-overall pick last year out of Georgia Tech vaulted himself to the top of prospect lists after hitting .355/.454/.600 with 27 home runs combined at high Class A Frederick and Double-A Bowie.

Last night, he actually was perfect.

As the designated hitter for the Surprise Rafters, Wieters went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a walk and an RBI, helping Surprise edge the Scottsdale Scorpions in 10 innings, 8-7. The season is only a few days old, but Wieters is off to a great start, leading the league with his .714 batting average. He also has a triple.

Other Notable Prospects
Peoria Javelinas shortstop Carlos Triunfel (Mariners) finished the regular season on a high note and has picked up where he left off in the AFL. Yesterday, he went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI to help the Javelinas defeat the Phoenix Desert Dogs, 6-3, remaining undefeated. Triunfel is the youngest player in the league and has played a different position each game, but it hasn’t affected his hitting. Through the first three games, he’s hitting .385/.429/.615. . . . Javelinas first baseman Juan Miranda (Yankees) went 4-for-4 with two doubles and a triple. The 25-year-old Cuban spent the entire season with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and hit .287/.384/.449 with 12 home runs. . . Javelinas righthander Jeremy Jeffress (Brewers) threw three innings, giving up one run on two hits and striking out four. . . Scottsdale first baseman Mark Trumbo (Angels) went 3-for-5 with a double. Trumbo hit .281/.325/.540 with 32 home runs between the California League and the Texas League this season. . . Rafters third baseman Wes Hodges (Indians) went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run. . . Peoria Saguaros center fielder Shane Robinson (Cardinals) has hit a total of eight home runs over 814 professional at-bats since being selected in the fifth round of the 2006 draft out of Florida State. But that didn’t stop him from going deep yesterday against Mesa. A solo home run was part of a 3-for-5 afternoon. . . Robinson’s teammate, third baseman Shawn Bowman (Mets), also had a good day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and four RBIs as the Saguaros handled the Mesa Solar Sox, 9-2.
