Prospect Of The Day

In a move that probably shocks no one, Augusta (Giants) lefthander Madison Bumgarner is today’s POTD. Bumgarner worked five innings against Hickory (Pirates), allowed a run on three hits and struck out nine with one walk. Bumgarner struck out eight of the first 10 hitters he faced and extended his shutout streak to 38 innings, but it was snapped in the fourth after Hickory’s Matt Hague lined a single to right and Augusta right fielder Garrett Baker misplayed the bounce, allowing Hague to go all the way to third. Erik Huber drove in Hague with an RBI groundout.

Bumgarner finishes the regular season at 15-3, 1.46 with 164 strikeouts in 142 innings, putting him in line to win the three pitching triple crown categories. And since Augusta is in position to make the postseason—they lead Columbus by 5 1/2 games—Bumgarner could get at least one more start before all is done.

The Mets promoted 17-year-old shortstop Wilmer Flores from Rookie-level Kingsport to Savannah, where he made his debut last night against Charleston (Yankees). Hitting third in the Sand Gnats’ order, Flores singled in his first at-bat and went on to go 2-for-5 with a run scored … Greenville (Red Sox) third baseman Michael Almanzar hit his first home run since joining the Drive, a third inning two-run shot off Asheville (Rockies) lefthander Christian Friedrich. Almanzar went on to go 2-for-5 … Friedrich lasted only three innings and took the loss against Greenville. He got through the first two frames unscathed, but things came apart in the third, when he gave up six runs on five hits, capped off by Almanzar’s home run … Charleston DH Austin Romine went 3-for-5 with his 10th home run of the year.

What To Watch For Today

Righthander Dellin Betances (8-4, 3.70) is scheduled to start tonight for Charleston against Rome (Braves) … Augusta can clinch its division with a win or a Columbus (Rays) loss.

Prospect Of The Day

Dayton (Reds) third baseman Brandon Waring hit two home runs as the Dragons knocked off Lansing (Blue Jays) 5-4. This was Waring’s third multi-homer game of the season—the other two were both in April—and he reached to the 20-home run plateau, making him only the third Midwest Leaguer to do so this year. He drove in three runs, giving him 67 RBIs on the year, and his line stands at .266/.342/.463.

Cedar Rapids (Angels) clinched a playoff spot after knocking off Wisconsin (Mariners) 3-2 behind six strong innings from lefthander Robert Fish. Fish allowed a run on three hits while striking out eight and walking three to improve to 10-4, 4.91 … Burlington (Royals) third baseman Mike Moustakas went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs as he continues to tear it up in August, hitting .343/.386/.638 in 105 at-bats … Clinton (Rangers) righthander Michael Main allowed only one run on five hits over 5 2/3 innings against Peoria (Cubs). He struck out six and didn’t walk anyone, but didn’t figure in the decision. Main’s numbers stand at 2-2, 2.64 in 44 1/3 innings.

What To Watch For Today

There’s only one playoff spot still up for grabs—Dayton leads Fort Wayne (Padres) by four games for the wild-card spot in the Eastern Division. Dayton visits Lansing tonight while Fort Wayne hosts South Bend (Diamondbacks) … Beloit (Twins) righthander Mike McCardell (9-4, 3.02) will go against Kane County (Athletics).
