Durham righthander Wade Davis (Rays) stymied the Indianapolis batters for six innings, keeping them off the board while allowing just one hit and two walks. The 22-year-old Davis struck out eight in what was the Southern Division clincher for the Bulls, a team that sits just four games over .500. He’s gone 3-2, 2.68 in 47 innings since his promotion from Double-A, with 48 strikeouts, 21 walks and five home runs allowed.

Prospect Nuggets

It was a good day for Blue Jays prospects at Syracuse. LHP Ricky Romero struck out six batters and walked three in seven shutout innings at Rochester. He allowed just three hits and improved to 2-3, 3.53. LF Travis Snider went 1-for-4 with a double (five), an RBI, a run scored and two strikeouts . . . Rochester 3B Luke Hughes (Twins), the Australian hitting sensation, went 2-for-4 to improve to .296/.327/.469 through 98 at-bats. His aggregate minor league numbers now stand at .313/.370/.530 through 383 at-bats.

Nashville third baseman Mat Gamel (Brewers) rebounded from a brutal Triple-A debut on Sunday (0-for-4, four strikeouts, error) to go 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored yesterday. The Sounds, who lost 9-8 to Albuquerque, reside in last place, meaning that the 23-year-old Gamel won’t be playing in a minor league playoff series. Instead, he may simply be getting a tune-up before a September callup to Milwaukee.

Salt Lake SS Brandon Wood (Angels) went 1-for-3 with three walks in a doubleheader split with Portland. The Bees remain five games up on Tacoma . . . Sacramento RF Aaron Cunningham (Athletics) went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored . . . After playing miserably for the first four months of the season, Portland 2B Matt Antonelli (Padres) has found himself in August, during which he’s batting .300/.411/.475 in 80 at-bats . . . New Orleans RHP Bobby Parnell (Mets) struck out six Omaha batters in six innings, but also surrendered two runs on five hits and four walks.
