Prospect Of The Day
Since mid-July, Matt Moore has been almost robotic. The 19-year-old Princeton (Rays) righthander has not yielded more than three hits or one earned run in any of his last five starts, including yesterday’s win over Bristol (White Sox) when he threw five scoreless innings and gave up just one hit while punching out six. Impressively, of the nine outs he recorded that did not come by way of strikeout, all of them came via ground balls. Opponents are batting just .163 against him for the season and have failed to generate more than 10 hits over his last 25 innings.
Prospect Nuggets
Orem (Angels) extended its winning streak to 11 games with the aid of Roberto Lopez’s bat, as the first baseman belted two home runs to lift the Owlz to a 7-3 win over Helena (Brewers). He also added his 21st double of the season and finished 4-for-5, running his batting average up to .402, which leads the Pioneer League . . . Ogden (Dodgers) third baseman Pedro Baez was 1-for-3 with his eighth home run of the season in his attempt to work back up to low Class A Great lakes where he struggled at the beginning of the year . . . In doubleheader action, GCL Red Sox shortstop Casey Kelly went 3-for-6 with an RBI and two doubles . . . Josh Smoker delivered five innings of one-run ball, allowing three hits and striking out eight to earn the win. The GCL Nationals lefthander boasts a 1.19 ERA in five starts with the club . . . Center fielder Xavier Avery and second baseman L.J. Hoes were each 2-for-4 yesterday for the GCL Orioles. Avery added a run and two stolen bases to give him 13 on the season, while Hoes scored twice and drove in one . . . Tallying his ninth multi-hit game in his last 13 contests, Helena (Brewers) left fielder Erik Komatsu hit his 10th home run as part of a 2-for-4 performance that saw him raise his batting average to .350 . . . Left fielder Destin Hood was 2-for-6, doubling twice to drive in two runs as the GCL Nationals swept a twin bill with the GCL Cardinals.
What To Watch For Today
The AZL Giants get a day off today, but they will carry their eight-game winning streak into the weekend with games scheduled against the AZL Cubs and AZL Royals for Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
