Good news for International League prospect watchers—and bad news for IL hitters—came Sunday when the Rays announced that 22-year-old David Price had been promoted to Triple-A Durham. He will start Wednesday at home against Norfolk.
The 6-foot-6 lefty, the first overall pick in 2007 from Vanderbilt, missed most of the first two months of the season with a muscle strain in his left elbow, and he didn’t make his pro debut until May 22. But upon his return to the field, he made short work of the Florida State and Southern leagues, going a perfect 11-0, 1.87 in 91 2/3 innings, with 92 strikeouts (9.0 per nine innings) and 23 walks (2.3).
Price joins a prospect-laden Durham rotation, which already features righthanders Wade Davis, 23; Mitch Talbot, 24; and Jeff Niemann, 25, who was the fourth overall pick in 2004. The Bulls have a 9 1/2-game advantage on Norfolk in the IL’s Southern Division, and if Tampa Bay can resist calling up Price in September, Durham could feature the league’s most formidable playoff rotation.
