INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
The redemption of Buffalo left fielder Trevor Crowe (Indians) continued last night in Durham, as the Bisons’ leadoff batter went 3-for-5 with a home run (two), a triple (one), a stolen base (one), a walk, two strikeouts and three runs scored. He missed hitting for the cycle by a double. The Indians selected the switch-hitting Crowe 14th overall in 2005 out of Arizona, but after struggling at Double-A in 2006 and 2007, his future seemed in doubt. The 24-year-old batted .323/.404/.485 for Akron this year, in his third crack at the Eastern League, to earn a promotion to Triple-A.
Prospect Nuggets
Charlotte 3B Chris Getz (White Sox) played his second game of the season at the hot corner—adding it to a list that includes second base, shortstop and left field—and went 2-for-4 with two doubles (24) and a walk . . . Durham SS Reid Brignac (Rays) snapped back to life, going 2-for-5 with a home run (eight), a double (25), two runs and three RBIs . . . Syracuse LHP Ricky Romero (Blue Jays) made a forgettable Triple-A debut, going four innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. He struck out four and walked five . . . Two recently-traded righthanders made debuts for their new clubs, and each surrendered two home runs in the effort. Buffalo’s Anthony Reyes (Indians) went five innings and gave up three runs on five hits, compiling four strikeouts and four walks. Indianapolis’ Ross Ohlendorf (Pirates) struck out five and walked two in six innings, but gave up four runs on seven hits.
What To Watch For Today
The Twins bumped RHP Anthony Swarzak to Rochester, where he starts at Pawtucket today at noon—despite middling success with Double-A New Britain. The Twins hope the change of scenery will produce better results. It would almost have to. Swarzak, who is still just 22, went 3-8, 5.67 with 76 strikeouts, 37 walks and 12 home runs in 102 innings.
PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
Who else but Brandon Wood? The Salt Lake shortstop yesterday clubbed his ninth home run of July—and his 22nd overall—in going 2-for-4 with double (16), a walk and two runs scored. He’s now batting .354/.443/.697 with those nine homers, five doubles, 20 RBIs, 16 walks and 21 strikeouts in 99 at-bats this month.
Prospect Nuggets
If not Wood for POTD, then Las Vegas 3B Blake DeWitt (Dodgers), who homered (two) in his second straight game, and also chipped in a triple (one) and four RBIs . . . A pair of first basemen—Colorado Springs’ Joe Koshansky (Rockies) and Tucson’s Josh Whitesell (Diamondbacks)—hit their 20th home runs of the season . . . Tacoma 3B Matt Tuiasosopo (Mariners) went 2-for-4 with a double (27) and three runs scored.
What To Watch For Today
Mets LHP Jon Niese moves up to Triple-A and will start for New Orleans tonight. As luck would have it, the Zephyrs just left Salt Lake yesterday, so the 21-year-old lefty will get to pitch in the more favorable conditions of Zephyr Field. And with John Maine’s shoulder ailing and Pedro Martinez’s availability in question, Niese, who went 6-7, 3.04 with 112-44 K-BB in 124 innings for Binghamton, could be auditioning for a larger role.
