Prospect Of The Day
Two players were nearly equally deserving of this award after what they did yesterday. Second baseman Chris Coghlan went 2-for-5 with two home runs yesterday for Carolina (Marlins), giving him five home runs of the year. But Huntsville’s Matt LaPorta also homered twice and drew a walk, giving the Brewers farmhand 18 home runs already. LaPorta’s extra time on base gives him the nod here, giving Huntsville yet another POTD.

Prospect Nuggets
Carolina righthander Brett Sinkbeil allowed three runs (two earned) in five innings. He walked only one, but he only struck out two.

TEXAS LEAGUE

Prospect Of The Day
Dexter Fowler has the tools to be an elite player. Staying healthy has been the bigger question so far for the Rockies center fielder. He’s performed well though this season with Tulsa, including yesterday when he went 3-for-4 with a walk to raise his season line to .295/.385/.460 in 237 at-bats.

Prospect Nuggets
In his previous start, Blake Wood had one of the best performances of the year by a pitching prospect, throwing a nine-inning shutout with 10 strikeouts. The performance was impressive in its own right, but even more so because it was Wood’s second Double-A start. Yesterday was the complete opposite for the Northwest Arkansas (Royals) righthander, who recorded just one out before being pulled from the game. Wood allowed five runs, four hits, one walk and had one strikeout . . . Midland (Athletics) righthander Vin Mazzaro had better results, allowing two runs (one earned) in 6 1/3 innings with a 6-1 K-BB mark . . . Springfield (Cardinals) center fielder Jon Jay went 2-for-4, raising his season averages to .308/.364/.470 in 234 at-bats.
