Ryan Patterson is having the kind of week hitters dream about, while Cameron Maybin isn’t doing too bad himself.
EASTERN LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
With only one game on tap, there wasn’t much to choose from, but thankfully, a 17-10 game is going to give plenty of hitting stars. The hottest hitter in the minors this week may be Ryan Patterson (Blue Jays). Patterson had three hits, which is actually a pretty routine game for him these days. it was his fourth-straight game with three or more hits, as he’s now 14 for his last 18 (.778) with three home runs and two doubles.
Prospect Nuggets
Daniel Haigwood’s ERA took a hit thanks to his four runs allowed on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings. The spot-starter had given up only five runs in his previous 16 appearances, which explains why he still has a very good 2.45 ERA . . . New Hampshire catcher Brian Jeroloman (Blue Jays) had a pair of hits and his fourth home run of the season. After hitting one home run in his first 105 at-bats, Jeroloman now has three in his last 28 ABs.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
It’s been an up-and-down season for Cameron Maybin (Marlins). He’s shown all of the tools that have made him one of the game’s top outfield prospects, but those glimpses of greatness have been sandwiched around too many strikeouts (73 in 202 at-bats). Maybin is on a hot streak right now though. He’s struck out once in his past five games, and on Monday he provided most of Carolina’s offense as he went 3-for-5 with a triple and his 10th home run of the season. That game came on the heels of a two home-run night on Sunday.
Prospect Nuggets
It’s hard to find a day where at least one Huntsville Star isn’t mentioned. Today it’s hard not to mention nearly the hole team. In a sweep of Chattanooga, the Stars had plenty of heroes. In the first game, Alcides Escobar (Brewers) and Mat Gamel. Escobar had two hits, including his third triple of the season and drove in three, while Gamel hit his 18th double of the season and stole a base (his fourth). They were both bad in the field though, as Gamel committed his 12th error at third while Escobar made a pair of errors at shortstop. Then in the nightcap, Escobar went 2-for-2 with a double and a stolen base, Matt LaPorta hit his 15th home run of the season and they were all overshadowed by David Welch’s no-hitter . . . James McDonald (Dodgers) struck out eight, one off his season-high as he got a no-decision against Mobile . . . Wade Davis (Rays) recovered after a rocky first inning to beat Carolina. Davis settled down to retire 11 of the last 12 batters he faced, showing he could battle on a day he didn’t have his best stuff . . . Jeff Samardzija (Cubs) may be turning things around. After a brutal start to the season, Samardzija put together his second straight strong start, allowing one run in six innings, walking no one while fanning five.
TEXAS LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
Righthander Julio Pimentel had allowed at least five runs in each of his past four starts, including one where he failed to make it out of the first inning. The Royals prospect turned that around on Monday, allowing three hits and one run in seven innings.
“[Pimentel ] kept the ball down low and threw strikes all night,” catcher Adam Donachie told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. “He stayed ahead of the hitters and made them put the ball in play.”
Prospect Nuggets
Will Inman (Padres) is quietly having a very solid season in San Antonio. He allowed one run in seven innings on Monday to pick up his fifth win of the year. He struck out five, and he now has 65 Ks in 62 innings . . . Coming into Monday, Alan Johnson (Rockies) had struck out 29 batters in 64 innings, so it’s hard to figure out where his 7 IP, 5 H, O ER, 2 BB, 12 K performance came from. It was a career high in K’s for the 24-year-old Mississippi State alum . . . Thomas Diamond’s (Rangers) recovery from Tommy John surgery continues. He allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings in his third start of the year.
