A glance at yesterday’s Florida State League box scores revealed two interesting things: 1. Desmond Jennings made his 2008 debut for Vero Beach (Rays), and 2. for some reason the speedy center fielder was playing third base.
Well, it turns out the first part was true—Jennings went 1-for-4 and homered off Brevard County (Brewers) righthander Jeremy Jeffress to lead off the game—but the second part was just a typo. Jennings played his usual center field, where his outstanding speed and instincts earned him the honor of the best defensive outfielder in the low Class A South Atlantic League last year.
"It’s a combination of both (speed and instincts)," Vero Beach manager Jim Morrison said. "He gets a great jump on the ball, which adds to the range he has. Couple that with the speed he has, especially underway, and he’s able to catch some balls most guys can’t reach."
Jennings spent the beginning of the season on the disabled list, first with a back injury and then with a sore left shoulder.
(EDIT: Right after this post, Jennings’ position was corrected in the box score.)
