AAA Dish: Thompson, Boggs Deal

The headline says it all: Daryl Thompson and Mitchell Boggs flat-out dealt yesterday.

INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE

Prospect Of The Day

Look out, Toledo. Louisville may now be positioned to make up ground in the West Division—even as the Bats move forward without Jay Bruce. Already armed with righthander Homer Bailey and lefty Matt Maloney, the Reds’ top farm club this week added 22-year-old righty Daryl Thompson to the staff, and he made an impressive Triple-A debut Wednesday.

Thompson, who very well could wind up being the key piece from the 2006 Austin Kearns trade, struck out six Columbus batters in seven innings, while giving up a lone unearned run on four hits and two walks. Healthy after early-career shoulder trouble, Thompson was one of the finest pitchers in the Double-A Southern League prior to his promotion. He went 3-2, 1.76 with 56 strikeouts and 14 walks in 61 1/3 innings for Chattanooga.

Prospect Nuggets

Durham SS Reid Brignac (Rays) took over the IL doubles lead by striking his 19th last season. He was 1-for-3 with two walks, two RBIs and a strikeout . . . It hasn’t been all roses for Rochester CF Jason Pridie (Twins) as he adapts to life in a new organization. (He was in the offseason Matt Garza-Delmon Young trade.) He’s batting .225/.271/.324 with one home run and about a strikeout (55) a game (53). Yesterday, Pridie was 3-for-5 with a triple (six) and a steal (nine), and it’s in those speed categories where he’s fared best this season. He ranks second in the league in triples . . . Indianapolis CF Andrew McCutchen (Pirates) was 3-for-5.

What To Watch For Today

Scranton RHP Daniel McCutchen (Yankees) makes his second Triple-A start tonight in Pawtucket, where he’ll match up with RHP Justin Masterson (Red Sox), who’s making just his third Triple-A start.

PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE

Prospect Of The Day

Righthander Mitchell Boggs (Cardinals) continues his steady improvement from fifth-round pick (Georgia, 2005) to effective Triple-A starter for Memphis. And after yesterday’s complete-game five-hitter, Boggs may get a chance this season to prove himself in the Cardinals’ rotation.

Boggs, 24, has performed well all season, going 5-1, 3.17 with 43 strikeouts and 21 walks in 65 1/3 innings, a total that ranks second in the PCL. He struck out five yesterday, while walking four, but he does have a 10-strikeout game to his credit this season. He accomplished that May 18 against Oklahoma.

Prospect Nuggets

Two days after hitting for the cycle, Fresno RF Nate Schierholtz (Giants) went deep again for his seventh home run, a three-run shot. He was 1-for-4 with a strikeout in the game . . . Sacramento LHP Gio Gonzalez (Athletics) had his second encouraging start in his past three: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 SO. It will take a few more efforts like this to improve his season line—and not like May 23: 3 2/3 IP, 10 H, 10 R, 2 HR, 2 BB, 5 SO . . . Tucson 2B Emilio Bonifacio (Diamondbacks) was 4-for-5 with a walk, two runs and two RBIs yesterday and legged out his third triple of the year . . . Modest though it is, Memphis CF Colby Rasmus (Cardinals) collected a hit in his fourth straight game yesterday, as part of a 1-for-3 effort a double (five), a steal (six), two runs, two walks and two strikeouts. He’s digging out of an early-season hole: .197/.298/.332.

What To Watch For Today

Memphis LHP Jaime Garcia (Cardinals) was awesome in his first two Triple-A starts, striking out 12 and allowing two runs in 13 innings. In the following two: 10 innings, nine runs. He looks to rectify the situation today at Iowa.
