Jaime Garcia was ridiculously good in just his second Triple-A start, Brandon Jones showed signs of breaking out, Charlie Morton continued to deal, Michael Hollimon homered again and Jay Bruce connected for two more hits.
INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
With four hits in five at-bats yesterday, Richmond’s Brandon Jones (Braves) raised his average 20 points to .280. More significantly for the left fielder, his home run and two doubles propelled his slugging ahead by 56 points to .402. The 24-year-old Jones now has two home runs this season, one off Louisville’s Homer Bailey on Saturday and yesterday’s against Indianapolis’ Bryan Bullington.
A key reason for Jones’ sluggish start this season (.280/.356/.402) has been his work against IL lefthanders, who’ve limited him to .191/.208/.234 averages in 47 at-bats. The lefthanded batter has otherwise shown a sound batting eye, collecting 16 walks and 34 strikeouts in 132 at-bats on the year.
Prospect Nuggets
Richmond had nothing to worry about with RHP Charlie Morton on the mound. He moved to 2-0, 1.69 after striking out seven in seven innings, while allowing a run on five hits and two walks . . . Toledo 2B Michael Hollimon (Tigers) homered for the third straight game as part of a 2-for-4 night that also included a walk and a stolen base . . . Louisville CF Jay Bruce (Reds) hit in his fourth straight game and now has hits in eight of his last nine. He was 2-for-4 with his eighth double and his first caught stealing of the season, in eight attempts. So how has the 21-year-old fared in Triple-A? Bruce is now batting .352/.378/.613 with seven homers and 30 RBIs in 38 games. But with five unintentional walks in 142 at-bats, he’s certainly not trying to walk his way out of Louisville . . . Rochester RHP Kevin Mulvey (Twins) after his first four starts: 2-1, 1.16 with 25-7 K-BB and no home runs allowed in 23 1/3 innings. In four starts since: 0-4, 7.36 with 13-10 K-BB and five home runs allowed in 18 1/3 innings. In yesterday’s start against Columbus, Mulvey let in five runs (one earned) in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out two, walked two and allowed six hits. But the real problems occurred when runners were on base—he balked once and he (and catcher Jose Morales) allowed three stolen bases. Red Wings pitching coach Stu Cliburn told The (Rochester, N.Y.) Democrat and Chronicle:
"There’s a lot of concern with him. He’s not doing the intangibles. Holding runners on, fielding bunts. It’s beat him four games in a row."
"Do the fundamentals, that’s the way we do things over with the Twins," Cliburn said. "He’s had plenty of time to adjust.
What To Watch For Today
Lehigh Valley LHP J.A. Happ (Phillies), the IL strikeout leader, tries again for his first win. The 9-31 IronPigs host the Norfolk Tides at 7 p.m. . . . Buffalo RHP Adam Miller (Indians) and the Bisons host Pawtucket at 7 p.m.
PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE
Prospect Of The Day
The way lefthander Jaime Garcia (Cardinals) is pitching, he’ll be Prospect of the Day every time he takes the hill. Against Tucson yesterday, the 21-year-old threw seven shutout innings, struck out six and allowed six hits and a walk. And after recording 10 of 15 outs-in-play on the ground, his ratio of groundouts to fly outs stands at 2.38-to-1. In two Triple-A starts, covering 13 innings, Garcia has allowed two runs (one earned), struck out 12 and walked one.
Prospect Nuggets
Sacramento LHP Gio Gonzalez (Athletics) has given the River Cats six innings in each of his past two starts. (Last night: 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 4 BB, 4 SO.) He’s given up seven runs in those 12 innings, while striking out nine and walking six, so his ERA still resides at 4.85. Gonzalez, 22, has a healthy 30 strikeouts in 39 innings, but he’s allowed 65 baserunners in that span . . . Portland LF Chase Headley (Padres) was 1-for-4 with his fourth home run of the season . . . A pair of shaky nights for top prospects. Memphis CF Colby Rasmus’ (Cardinals) average dipped to .194 after going 0-for-5, and while 3B Ian Stewart (Rockies) was 1-for-3, he whiffed in his other two at-bats, was caught stealing and committed his 12th error . . . Fresno RF Nate Schierholtz (Giants) was 2-for-5 with his fourth home run of the season. While all 15 of the lefty hitter’s extra-base hits have come against righthanders, Schierholtz has hung in against southpaws, batting .290 with 3-6 BB-K in 31 at-bats.
