AAA Dish: Headley’s Past Is History

Chase Headley reached base in all six plate appearances, Charlie Morton kept getting batters out, Jay Bruce knocked two more hits and Jaime Garcia was very good in his Triple-A debut.

INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE

Prospect Of The Day

It was Richmond righthander Charlie Morton’s (Braves) day to throw, but inclement weather encouraged the Braves to start recent free agent sign Scott Williamson instead. No matter. Morton came out of the bullpen to pitch 7 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up just five hits, while striking out six.

For more on Morton, see today’s Prospect Hot Sheet.

Prospect Nuggets

Indianapolis CF Andrew McCutchen (Pirates) was 2-for-4 yesterday with a run and an RBI. He struck out twice, but did steal his 10th base of the season (in 14 tries) . . . Columbus RHP Collin Balester (Nationals) allowed just a run (none earned) in six innings, striking out three, walking two and allowing seven hits . . . Louisville CF Jay Bruce (Reds) kept hitting ‘em where they ain’t, collecting two hits in four at-bats, while stealing his 10th base.

What To Watch For Today

Buffalo RHP Adam Miller (Indians) throws at Rochester against LHP Brian Duensing (Twins) . . . Lehigh Valley LHP J.A. Happ (Phillies) attempts to put the Pigs in position to win their sixth game of the year. They’re home against Columbus.

PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE

Prospect Of The Day

Portland left fielder Chase Headley (Padres) went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate to become the first player to repeat as PCL Prospect of the Day on consecutive days. He walked in his other plate appearance and connected for his 11th double of the year. Looks like that slump is officially a thing of the past.

As with Morton, see our Prospect Hot Sheet for more on Headley, who occupies the top spot this week.

Prospect Nuggets

Memphis LHP Jaime Garcia (Cardinals) made a rousing Triple-A debut, pitching six innings while giving up two runs (one earned) in six innings. He struck out six and walked none . . . The Sacramento-Oklahoma doubleheader featured a combined 14 at-bats by two top prospects. River Cats CF Carlos Gonzalez (A’s) was a combined 3-for-7 with two RBIs, while RedHawks LF John Mayberry (Rangers) went 1-for-7, also with two RBIs . . . Sacramento LHP Gio Gonzalez (A’s) tossed six innings in game one, going six innings and allowing four runs on six hits (two homers) and two walks. He struck out five.

What To Watch For Today

Oklahoma RHP Eric Hurley (Rangers) takes the hill one day after his RedHawks and the visiting Sacramento River Cats played a doubleheader.

John Mayberry was traded by the Rangers to the Phillies last December. I am pretty sure he is currently playing at Lehigh Valley in the IL.
