HERMOSILLO, Mexico.–Mario Lisson smacked a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth as Venezuela´s Navegantes del Magallanes defetead Mexico´s Yaquis de Ciudad Obregón 4-3 in the second match of the Saturday in 2013 Caribbean Series.
Lisson is normally known more for his glove, he was rated the best defensive infielder in the Royals system by Baseball America heading into the 2009 and 2010 seasons. But on Saturday he had a solo home run in addition to his game winning single. Lisson's home run off of Óscar Villarreal cut Mexico's lead to 3-1 in the eighth. Venezuela eventually tied the game at three in the eighth, setting up Lisson's ninth-inning heroics.
Mexico´s club was 3-1 on the score in the eighth inning when Lisson hits his solo homer against Baltimore Orioles minor league . Venezuela scores again in the same inning to tie the score.
Righthander Mike Benacka was charged with the loss.
Dominican Republic Club Wins Again
Donell Linares hit a three-run home run as the Dominican Republic´s Leones del Escogido stayed undefeated with a 6-2 victory over Puerto Rico’s Criollos de Caguas in the opener of the second day of the Caribbean Series.
Just two days into the Caribbean Series, Escogido is reinforcing their status as the series favorite. On Saturday they made winning look easy.
The Dominican Republic club took the lead when Luis Jiménez scored on a fielding error by Puerto Rico´s shortstop Luis Mateo.
Puerto Rico answered as Jhonny Monell hit a two-run homer to give Caguas a 2-1 led, but this was Caguas' only lead of the day. Ricardo Nanita tied the game with a double to right and retook thelead in the seventh when Jordany Valdespin scored on a wild pitch.
Jailen Peguero picked up the win as he struck out three in 1 1/3 innings of work.
On Sunday, the Dominican Republic will face host Mexico at 5 p.m.; Puerto Rico will fight for its life in the tournament against Venezuela at 1 p.m. ET.
