Minor League Transactions: Oct. 9-15

Here we present official minor league transactions, conveyed to us by Major League Baseball, for the period Oct. 9-15.

Arizona Diamondbacks
Signed:
LHP Matt Way (Laredo (American Association)), C Humberto Cota (Monterrey (Mexican)), C Chris McMurray (re-signed), C Rossmel Perez (re-signed)

Released by the Reds during spring training ’09, Humberto Cota made his way to the Mexican League that season and has spent the past four years with Monterrey. He played catcher, first base and DH this season and hit .320/.406/.469 with five homers in 175 at-bats.

The Phillies drafted Washington State senior Matt Way in the fifth round of the ’09 draft and rushed him to low Class A in time for the South Atlantic League playoffs that season. He allowed a .197 average and one home run to righties over 234 at-bats in his debut, seemingly on his way to profiling as a back-end lefty starter. But then Way made just 17 appearances in ’10, spent all of ’11 on the disabled list and got released during spring training ’12. He pitched well enough in the American Association (7.8 strikeouts, 4.3 walks per nine innings) to get another shot in affiliated ball.

Lowery signing with the Royals is interesting.  He was a Wake Forest QB recruit out of HS who briefly made the majors in 2008.  He got hurt shortly there after and spent the 2012 season as a coach for the Royals low-A team.  I suppose his arm is feeling good and he is going to give pitching one last try.

Any idea where Sam Holland (Padres) and Dean Bell (Blue Jays) played previously?

I get a kick out of Fumimasa Ishibashi being released. He appeared in 3 games over the last four seasons for the Dodgers. Also Dave Meliah for the Rangers retired in 2003 and has been coaching summer ball. Just funny to see teams hold onto guys rights.

Matt Way was promoted to the Atlantic League near the completion of the 2012 season, proceeding to pitch 13 scoreless innings in 2 starts for the Long Island Ducks, one of those starts being a complete-game shutout.

^^

I think Holland is an Australian amateur. Bell might have played for St Petersburg CC.

If Dean Bell is the one from St. Petersburg College, as Dave suggests, then he is the first-born son of former Blue jay and one-time MVP George (Jorge) Bell.
