• A pair of Angels Double-A Arkansas righthanders stifled Tulsa in consecutive games, Johnny Hellweg delivering seven two-hit, shutout innings on Friday and Orangel Arenas throwing a two-hit complete game the next day. Hellweg has gone 3-4, 1.65 in his last seven starts, with 36 strikeouts, 11 walks and 29 hits allowed in 49 innings, and only San Antonio's Andrew Werner has a lower ERA in the Texas League in that time.
• Nationals 2011 first-round righthander Alex Meyer made his high Class A debut with Potomac on Friday, throwing six shutout innings and allowing just three hits. His fastball peaked in the mid-90s range while his slider touched 88 mph and his knuckle curve featured late break.
Top Performance By A Prospect-Eligible Pitcher Outside His Team's Top 30
Signed by the Blue Jays as a nondrafted free agent in 2010, righthander Jesse Hernandez has logged a 5.97 ERA through his first eight appearances with high Class A Dunedin this season—and that's after nearly throwing a no-hitter on Friday. In fact, the 23-year-old Central Michigan product navigated 8 2/3 innings without allowing a hit to a St. Lucie batter. He struck out 12, walked a batter, hit another and surrendered his first hit to Alonzo Harris with two outs in the ninth. Harris stole second and later scored on an infield error, by which time Hernandez was out of the game, though he got charged with the unearned run.
Noteworthy Performance In Short-Season League Play
Reds 2011 first-rounder Robert Stephenson benefits from playing in the only pitcher's park in the Rookie-level Pioneer League, but the Billings righthander took his show on the road Saturday, limiting Orem to one run on three hits over five innings. The 19-year-old Stephenson leads the PL with a 0.98 WHIP and .195 opponent average while sharing the lead with 37 strikeouts.
Worst Game Score By A Prospect
Rangers righty Luke Jackson struck out a career-high 12 batters on July 17, but he failed to get out of the second inning in his next start for high Class A Myrtle Beach, which he made Sunday. The 2010 supplemental pick is just 20, so don't read too much into the pitching line—1 1/3 innings, six hits, seven runs, a homer and three walks—that yielded a game score of 12.
Bill James' game score calculation (Wikipedia entry) rewards pitchers who work deep into games without allowing many runs or hits while providing extra credit for dominance (strikeouts) and control (few walks).
