Tigers Sign Dominican Shortstop Domingo Leyba

The Tigers have signed Domingo Leyba, a 16-year-old shortstop from the Dominican Republic.

Leyba was teammates with outfielder Gustavo Cabrera (who signed with the Giants today for $1.3 million) on the Dominican team that won the junior division RBI World Series last summer at Target Field in Minnesota. He's a 5-foot-9, 155-pound switch-hitter with a line-drive bat, but he stands out more in the field, where he shows smooth hands and a quick release, along with good baseball instincts. Like Cabrera, Leyba also trained with Christian Batista, who is known as "Niche."
