KANSAS CITY–With his plus power, Mike Olt is one of the best third base prospects in the game. And thanks to a lot of hard work, he's turned into a very solid third baseman defensively as well.
But whenever he gloves a ball that's hit to his left, he knows that he's going to get an earful.
Jurickson Profar, Olt's teammate on the left side of the Double-A Frisco infield, is the best shortstop prospect in the game. And like any elite, and young, shortstop, he thinks that he can get to about anything, which means that balls hit to Olt's left are also within the range of Profar's rangy glove and his above-average arm.
"He's an unbelievable shortstop," Olt said. "You see him make unreal play after unreal play. You almost expect it. He always yells at me, but I like to take some of the balls in the hole. He'll tell me, 'Mike that's my ball. Every fly ball as well.' "
"We communicate so well," Profar said while smiling. "We've got it under control."
For a day, Olt doesn't have to worry about hearing from Profar on a grounder. Olt is the starting third baseman for the U.S. team in the Futures Game, while Profar is the starting shortstop for the World team, sitting in the other dugout.
Frisco's infield doesn't have a whole lot of places for ground balls to go because former shortstop Leury Garcia is now Profar's middle infield partner as the Frisco second baseman. Garcia's range is also well above average, which keeps Profar on his toes.
"He's going to get to the ball quick. He's so fast that the ball is to you like that," Profar said.
While their glovework is impressive, Olt and Profar are among the best prospects in the game because of what they do at the plate as well. Olt put on one of the best shows during the pre-game batting practice at the Futures Game, hitting a home run to straight center that struck high up on the batter's eye.
