• With Lance Berkman and Allen Craig on the disabled list, the Cardinals looked to Triple-A Memphis first baseman Matt Adams to fill the void. The 23-year-old had mashed nine homers and slugged .603 in 37 games for the Redbirds, one year after winning Double-A Texas League MVP honors and setting a Springfield franchise record with 32 home runs. To give you an idea of how far Adams has come as a pro, consider the fact that he was a 23rd-round pick from Division II Slippery Rock (Pa.) in 2009 who spent all of the ’10 season in low Class A. He went 2-for-4 during his big league debut Sunday night.

Top Performance By A Prospect-Eligible Player Outside His Team's Top 30

Rockies second/third baseman Sam Mende cracked a couple homers and smacked three doubles while going 7-for-13 in four games at home with low Class A Asheville this weekend. All five of the 2011 31st-rounder's homers this season have come at home.

Rough Stretch

High Class A Bakersfield left fielder Juan Duran went 0-for-14 with five whiffs in two games at Lake Elsinore and one at Visalia. The Reds prospect is batting .156/.184/.303 through 109 at-bats in the Cal League this season.

The Bill James-devised runs created metric (Wikipedia entry explains ’02 version) rewards batters for avoiding outs and reaching base safely (on-base percentage) and for accumulating total bases (slugging percentage), two factors that correlate strongly with run scoring, and for obvious reasons.
