Signed: RHP Armando Galarraga, RHP Stuart Pomeranz, LHP Yoshihiro Doi, LHP Casey Fossum, C Ronny Paulino, C Dane Sardinha, 1B Jeff Larish, OF Juan Aguilar
The Orioles have signed a trio of lefthanders with extensive Nippon Professional Baseball experience this offseason. Wei-Yin Chen and Tsuyoshi Wada signed big league deals, while 35-year-old southpaw Yoshihiro Doi signed a minor league pact at the end of January. He pitched in the Japanese majors from ’98 through ’10, starting and ending his time there with Seibu. Doi signed on to play in the independent Atlantic League for ’11, though he did not secure a work visa. He'll try again with Baltimore this season.
Boston Red Sox
Signed: 1B Mauro Gomez
Removed from 40-man: RHP Scott Atchison (outrighted to Triple-A)
Playing in the Rangers and Braves systems, Mauro Gomez has bashed 16 homers or more in four of the past five minor league seasons. The 27-year-old batted .304/.356/.522 with 24 homers and 90 RBIs in 506 at-bats for Triple-A Gwinnett last season. He led the International League with 264 total bases, finished runner-up with 60 extra-base hits and ranked third in homers.
Signed: RHP Steven Maxwell (37), LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith
Released: RHP Steven Maxwell, RHP Santo Rodriguez
The Cubs signed 37th-round Texas Christian senior Steven Maxwell on Feb. 2, then released him a day later.
Chicago White Sox
Signed: RHP Mitch Mustain, 1B Dan Johnson
The White Sox signed Mitch Mustain out of a tryout camp, even though the 24-year-old hasn't pitched since high school in ’05. The Springdale, Ark., native pursued a football career in college, playing quarterback for Arkansas and Southern California through ’09. Mustain started only one game for USC and ran afoul of the law, so no NFL team drafted or signed him in ’11. Instead, he signed to play in the Arena Football League last September prior to working out for Chicago. Check out Mustain's detailed Wikipedia entry for more.
Signed: RHP Wirfin Obispo (Nippon-Ham (Japan)), LHP Jeff Francis, 3B Jason Christian
Wirfin Obispo has pitched in Japan since ’07, though he did play in the low, low minors for two major league organizations about a decade ago. He played shortstop for the Dominican Summer League Red Sox in ’02 and then pitched for the DSL Reds in ’04 and ’05.
Signed: RHP Jared Wells, LHP Justin Edwards, C Steve Holm
Signed: SS Brent Dlugach
Released: RHP Cody Satterwhite, C Adrian Casanova
Signed: OF Justin Ruggiano
Justin Ruggiano attended high school in Austin and played college ball Texas A&M, which coupled with the state of the Astros offense makes this a practical signing for both him and for Houston. He's batted .289/.362/.473 in 2,064 plate appearances at the Triple-A level since ’07.
Kansas City Royals
Signed: RHP Branly Crisostomo
The Royals signed Branly Crisostomo out of the Dominican Prospect League.
Los Angeles Dodgers
Signed: RHP Ricardo Perez, LHP Andy Sisco (Campeche (Mexican)), OF Chris Pettit
Signed: RHP Josh Schmidt
Signed: 1B Chris Colabello (Worcester (Can-Am))
Chris Colabello turned in his finest season for independent Worcester last year, batting .348/.410/.600 with 20 homers in 365 at-bats to win BA Independent League Player of the Year honors. He has spent the bulk of his time in pro ball since signing in ’05 playing for the Worcester, Mass., club in the Can-Am League (near his alma mater of Assumption College). Colabello's father pitched in the Italian Baseball League, and Chris may set his eyes there if he fails to latch on in the Twins system.
New York Yankees
Signed: RHP Andury Acevedo, C David Remedios
Toronto Blue Jays
Signed: 1B Koby Clemens
Koby Clemens mashed 26 homers in Double-A in ’10, and that's a total he may approach once more with Triple-A Las Vegas this season.
Signed: RHP Mitch Atkins, RHP Chad Durbin, OF Rick Ankiel, 3B Mark Teahen
