Right fielder Brandon Moss played the role of playoff hero for Triple-A Lehigh Valley in ’11, batting .385 with four homers and eight RBIs in seven postseason games for the IronPigs. That performance earned him a September callup to Philadelphia, but the 28-year-old Moss has spent the bulk of the past five seasons in the International League, batting .275/.352/.487 in more than 1,800 plate appearances. He has upped his career high for homers to 22 and 23 in successive seasons, so he appears to be finding his power stroke.

Pittsburgh Pirates

Removed from 40-man: C Eric Fryer (outrighted to Triple-A)

While Kyle Cofield hasn't really pitched above the Double-A level, the 24-year-old righty throws a heavy fastball that tops out near 95 mph and has flashed a plus low-80s slider. Keeping him healthy will be key (just 30 innings in ’11), but the White Sox thought enough of Cofield to acquire him when they traded Scott Linebrink to the Braves about a year ago.

Tampa Bay Rays
Signed: RHP Jhonny Nunez

The first Rays minor league free agent sign of the offseason, righty reliever Jhonny Nunez has teased three previous organizations with the promise of a plus fastball/slider combo. The Nationals, Yankees and White Sox all traded for him, and the 26-year-old Nunez does own a strong strikeout rate (9.1 per nine innings) at the Triple-A level. If he doesn't surface in the Tampa Bay bullpen this year, he could succeed Jake McGee and Winston Abreu as closer for Triple-A Durham.

Texas Rangers

Toronto Blue Jays
Signed: RHP Miguel Castro, RHP Garrett Mock

Garrett Mock made the Nationals rotation out of spring training ’10, but he missed the bulk of the season with nerve injury in his neck that required surgery. He then missed the bulk of the ’11 season, prompting Washington to designate him for assignment. Mock has pitched at the Triple-A level since ’08, putting up solid peripherals, including a 1.20 WHIP and 8.4 strikeouts and 3.0 walks per nine innings. The 28-year-old reunites with former Nats scouting director Dana Brown in Toronto.
