The first wave of minor league free agents began signing with new teams mere days after attaining free agency. For those players who re-signed with the same organization, a distinction is made between those who signed prior to the Nov. 2 free agent declaration date. Those listed with an asterisk (*) re-signed before they actually reached the market.
The Minor League Free Agent Tracker documents the first wave of signees.
Atlanta Braves
Signed: LHP Jose Lugo (re-signed*)
Chicago Cubs
Signed: SS Jonathan Mota (re-signed*)
Chicago White Sox
Signed: C Jared Price (re-signed)
Cincinnati Reds
Signed: C Corky Miller (re-signed), OF Daryl Jones
The Cardinals had high hopes for their ’05 third-rounder Daryl Jones, but the athletic outfielder stalled at Double-A with too little range or instincts for center and too little power for a corner. The 24-year-old batted .263/.353/.389 over 1,168 plate appearances for Springfield, where he spent the bulk of the past four seasons.
Colorado Rockies
Signed: RHP Josh Sullivan (re-signed*)
Detroit Tigers
Signed: SS Audy Ciriaco (re-signed*), SS Argenis Diaz (re-signed*), OF Matt Young
Matt Young doesn't hit for much power, but he bats lefty and plays second base as well as all three outfield spots. Listed at 5-foot-8, he went undrafted out of New Mexico in ’04, but he's performed admirably in Triple-A, where he batted .286/.374/.380 over 1,012 PAs.
Florida Marlins
Signed: RHP Brett Zawacki (re-signed*), LHP Michael Jarman, LHP Beau Jones, SS Jeff Dominguez (re-signed)
The Rangers acquired Beau Jones in the same Mark Teixeira trade with the Braves that famously netted Elvis Andrus, Neftali Feliz, Matt Harrison and Jarrod Saltalamacchia (who beget Roman Mendez and Chris McGuiness). Taken 41st overall in the ’05 draft, Jones has shown strikeout stuff (9.1 per nine innings for his career) but shaky control (4.8 walks).
Houston Astros
Signed: RHP Adalberto Flores, OF Travis Buck
Adalberto Flores stands 6-foot-7 and generates tremendous plane on his low-90s fastball, but walks have been an issue.
Since putting up a shiny .850 OPS as a 23-year-old rookie in ’07, Travis Buck has batted a cumulative .220/.281/.366 in 495 big league PAs. After winning a Triple-A National Championship with Columbus this year, Buck signed on quickly with the Astros, who don't have a ton of corner-outfield depth at the big league level. Notables include Brian Bogusevic, J.D. Martinez and J.B. Shuck.
Kansas City Royals
Signed: 1B Jamie Romak (re-signed)
Traded: OF Melky Cabrera to Giants for LHP Jonathan Sanchez and LHP Ryan Verdugo
Los Angeles Dodgers
Signed: RHP Will Savage (re-signed*), C Salomon Manriquez, SS Lance Zawadzki
Milwaukee Brewers
Signed: C Patrick Arlis (re-signed), SS Juan Sanchez (re-signed)
New York Mets
Signed: C Jean Luc Blaquiere (re-signed*), OF Raul Reyes (re-signed*)
New York Yankees
Signed: RHP Ronny Marte (re-signed*), 2B Reegie Corona (re-signed*)
Released: RHP Gabriel Tatis
Philadelphia Phillies
Signed: C Tuffy Gosewisch (re-signed*)
Pittsburgh Pirates
Signed: C Milver Reyes (re-signed), C Wyatt Toregas (re-signed), 2B Keoni De Renne, 3B Vince Harrison (York (Atlantic)), OF Jason Cooper (St. Paul (American Association)), OF Michael Ryan
Elected free agency: 1B Steve Pearce
St. Louis Cardinals
Released: RHP Richard Mendoza
San Francisco Giants
Traded: LHP Jonathan Sanchez and LHP Ryan Verdugo to Royals for OF Melky Cabrera
Seattle Mariners
Removed from 40-man: LHP Anthony Vasquez (outrighted to Triple-A)
Tampa Bay Rays
Signed: RHP Jairo de la Rosa (re-signed*)
Elected free agency: 1B Dan Johnson
Removed from 40-man: 1B Dan Johnson (outrighted to Triple-A)
Texas Rangers
Signed: SS Guilder Rodriguez (re-signed*)
Removed from 40-man: RHP Mason Tobin (outrighted to Triple-A)
Rule 5 pick Mason Tobin spent the majority of the season on the disabled list after making just four appearances for Texas. (His innings totals for ’10: 0; for ’09: 3; for ’08: 37.) The Rangers intended to return Tobin to the Angels following the season, but Los Angeles declined and the Rangers got to keep him for no compensation.
Toronto Blue Jays
Signed: RHP Sean Shoffit (re-signed*), 2B Ivan Contreras (re-signed*)
Washington Nationals
Signed: SS Josh R. Johnson (re-signed)
Assigned to Arizona Fall League: LHP Matt Purke
