The Royals have signed Dominican outfielder Elier Hernandez for $3.05 million, the International Prospect League announced.
Several scouts considered Hernandez, a 16-year-old from San Cristobal, either the top prospect or one of the top prospects to come out of Latin America this year. At 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, Hernandez has a major league body and explosive bat speed from the right side. Baseball America subscribers can read a complete scouting report on Hernandez and more of the top prospects eligible to sign this July 2.
Hernandez's bonus right now stands as the highest of all-time for an international amateur outfielder and the third-highest bonus ever for any international amateur player (excluding Cuban defectors). Only Athletics righthander Michael Ynoa ($4.25 million in 2008) and Twins shortstop Miguel Sano ($3.15 million in 2009) rank ahead of him.
