Signed: RHP Yhency Brazoban, RHP Mike DeMark (York (Atlantic))
Traded: RHP Andrea Pizziconi to Royals for C Lucas May
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Charles Brewer
The Padres signed Mike DeMark out of the Frontier League in ’07 and he rose to some degree of prospect relevance in the organization prior to his release this spring. He reestablished his case in the Atlantic League this spring with a 17-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 10 1/3 innings, piquing Arizona's interest. The Diamondbacks, of course, are now headed by San Diego expatriates Kevin Towers and his assistant Bill Bryk.
The 26-year-old Lucas May effectively replaces John Hester, the player to be named in the Mark Reynolds trade, as Triple-A catcher insurance. Outrighted off the Royals' 40-man roster this spring, May batted just .176/.263/.329 for Triple-A Omaha prior to the trade. Contrary to his recent Triple-A performance, he batted went just 3-for-26 (.115) versus lefties.
Signed: RHP Eddie Morlan (Southern Maryland (Atlantic))
Recalled: OF Matt Young
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Mike Minor
Reinstated from DL: OF Kyle Rose
Eddie Morlan joined Double-A Mississippi, his third Southern League club in the past two years. He spent time with Montgomery (Rays) and Huntsville (Brewers) last season, after which he became a free agent. Morlan attracted little interest in the offseason, but the Braves saw something in his Atlantic League showing, as the numbers attest—15 strikeouts, zero walks, two runs allowed in 13 innings.
Optioned to Double-A: LHP Pedro Viola
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Ryan O'Shea
Reinstated from DL: SS Manny Machado, OF Trent Mummey
Manny Machado and Trent Mummey resumed their stellar full-season debuts after month-long disabled list stints. Machado has gone 3-for-17 in four games back, but his season line still stands at .308/.414/.570 through 107 at-bats for low Class A Delmarva. Up a level with high Class A Frederick, Mummey has gotten off to a faster start, going 7-for-20 (.350) with a homer, a double and three steals in four attempts.

Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Trey Haley, RHP Toru Murata, C Dwight Childs, 2B Matt Lawson
Reinstated from DL: RHP Rob Bryson, 1B Nick Johnson, OF Nick Weglarz
Wes Hodges played regularly for Triple-A Columbus on their run to the International League title last year, but it was a different story entirely for the ’06 second-rounder this season. In 125 plate appearances, Hodges batted a sluggish .219/.276/.325 for the Clippers. First base now belongs to Nick Johnson (who recently returned from the disabled list) and Jared Goedert.
Released: RHP Brad McAtee, RHP Charlie Ruiz, RHP Billy Vopinek, LHP Josh Muecke

Mere weeks after turning to Double-A righty Juan Nicasio, the Rockies call up two more of their finest prospects, this time from Triple-A Colorado Springs: power lefty reliever Rex Brothers and multi-skilled outfielder Charlie Blackmon. The 34th pick in the ’09 draft, Brothers breezed through the Pacific Coast League this season, striking out 45 and walking 15 in 28 innings. His 14.5 strikeouts per nine ranked second among PCL relievers.
As to Blackmon, he's the first player signed by BA alum (and Atlanta-based area scout) Alan Matthews to reach the big leagues. A second-rounder in ’08, Blackmon did all the things necessary to receive a callup. He hit for average (.337), hit for power (10 homers, .572 slugging), stole bases (12 in 17 attempts) and made consistent contact (strikeouts in just 14 percent of at-bats). His 33 extra-base hits still rank fifth in the PCL. Drafted as a center fielder, Blackmon played more right field for the Sky Sox (he's a former lefthanded pitcher).
Two recent waiver claims by Colorado could fill supporting roles in the big leagues this season. Claimed from the Blue Jays, reliever Josh Roenicke wasn't fooling many batters with his low-90s fastball and slider this season for Triple-A Las Vegas, but the 28-year-old is only two years removed from a 5-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio with the Reds' Triple-A club. Similarly, Ryan Rohlinger (formerly of the Giants) just didn't hit for Triple-A Fresno (.174/.294/.331), but he brings a strong glove at either shortstop or third base. One caveat applies to both Roenicke and Rohlinger: Both will be out of options next season.

Against the backdrop of the University of Connecticut's historic ’11 draft—in which George Springer went 11th to the Astros and Matt Barnes went 19th to the Red Sox—the Marlins released a pair of former Huskies. Dan Mahoney, an ’09 fourth-rounder, made just 22 starts in three pro seasons and didn't pitch at all this season. Like Mahoney, David Peters was an ’09 pick (16th round) and also did not play this season.

It combines the best elements of the Golden, Northern and United leagues. (Chico is a former Golden Baseball League franchise.) As to Paduch, the 28-year-old already has experience in affiliated ball. A Reds 12th-round pick in ’03, he (essentially) topped out in high Class A in ’06 before spending part or all of the next five years in the Northern, Frontier and North American leagues as well as the American Association.
