1. While not on the same scale as Szczur's re-worked deal with the Cubs, all instances of release-and-re-sign arrangements simply alter framework of existing contracts, e.g. compensation, opt-out date, etc.

2. As to teams recalling 40-man roster players in September, even in cases where the players do not travel with the team, I recently discovered a likely explanation for this practice. By recalling players (and thus terminating optional assignments), teams may in some cases be saving options on certain players who have spent fewer than 20 days on assignment.

We know that players on optional assignment must spend at least 20 days in the minors *during the season* for that option to vest. What I didn't realize is that *during the season* refers to the major league season and not the minor league one.

I have a question about somehing that happened a couple of this this week and several times in the past few - what's with teams releasing minor leaguers, then immediately resigning them (Ed Rogers, McClune, etc). Sometimes teams will cut injured imor-league types from the 40-man roster, then immediately re-sign them. Is this another one of those strange, esoteric procdural things (like teams recalling 40-man roster players in September no to report or minor league 60-day disabled lists)?
