To the commenter who noted that Cubs catcher Mark Johnson ought to be a free agent: You were right. Johnson shows up as a free agent in this installment of transactions.
Six other players qualified for minor league free agency, if only briefly, before re-upping with their prior organizations: SS Christian Lara (Dodgers), SS Mario Lisson (Royals), LHP Drew Rundle (Philllies) and the Rangers trio of 2B Travis Adair, RHP Chris Mobley and SS Guilder Rodriguez. That is to say, these players technically hit the free agent market and then quickly re-signed one or two days later.
Arizona Diamondbacks
Signed: OF Ryan LaPensee (NDFA—Wayne State (Mich.))
A native of LaSalle, Ontario, Ryan LaPensee finished a four-year career at Wayne State University as the school's all-time leader in hits, runs and doubles. He went undrafted in June and signed on to play in Canada's semipro Intercounty Baseball League. From there, LaPensee earned a tryout with the Padres, who did not offer him a contract. But the Diamondbacks caught word and signed him.

Dallas McPherson led the minor leagues with 42 home runs while playing for Triple-A Albuquerque in 2008. He hasn't played a full season in two years since, but he did hit 22 homers in 84 games for Triple-A Sacramento in the Athletics chain this year.
Cincinnati Reds
Signed: C Corky Miller (re-signed)
Released: LHP Ben Jukich
Elected free agency: C Corky Miller (subsequently re-signed)

Detroit Tigers
Released: 2B Carmelo Jaime
Florida Marlins
Signed: RHP Zach Dials, LHP Darin Downs, LHP Mark McLemore (Chico (Golden)), OF Jose Duarte
Righthanded reliever Zach Dials has run up high strikeout rates in high Class A with steady 90-94 mph velocity and a good changeup, but his command has been far too inconsistent to thrive even in Double-A. Drafted by the Blue Jays in 2006, released during the 2010 season and subsequently signed by the Nationals, he could benefit from a change of scenery.
Houston Astros
Signed: RHP Fernando Rodriguez, RHP Ross Wolf, C Carlos Corporan
Kansas City Royals
Traded: OF David DeJesus to Athletics for RHP Vin Mazzaro and LHP Justin Marks
Elected free agency: RHP Brian Bannister

Acquired: OF Anthony Jackson from Rockies as player to be named for RHP Octavio Dotel
Voluntarily retired: C Esteban Lopez
Granted free agency: SS Christian Lara (quickly re-signed)
A 16th-round pick from Pacific in 2006, Anthony Jackson spent two seasons with Double-A Tulsa, hitting just .236/.327/.310 in 856 at-bats. A 26-year-old center fielder, he stole 60 bases and sported a strong 104-to-131 walk-to-strikeout ratio.
Based on information from Japan, Kazuki Nishijima is a 21-year-old lefty who just graduated from Meiji University in Tokyo. Righthander Kazuya Takano is a high school senior whose class graduates in the spring. Both Japanese amateurs were preliminarily assigned to the Rookie-level Arizona League. Minnesota Twins
Signed: RHP Yorman Bazardo, LHP Jake Stevens, 2B Chase Lambin
Chase Lambin made the Triple-A International League all-star team in 2010, his first year back in the States after a year spent in Japan. He switch-hits while offering some pop and positional flexibility.
New York Mets
Signed: LHP Mike O'Connor (re-signed)
Oakland Athletics
Signed: RHP Gabe DeHoyos, OF Jai Miller
Traded: RHP Vin Mazzaro and LHP Justin Marks to Royals for OF David DeJesus
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Justin Souza
The Athletics briefly held Jai Miller in their midst during the season. They claimed him on waivers from the Marlins on April 8 but subsequently lost him on an April 26 waiver claim to the Royals. All told, he batted .252/.326/.490 with 18 homers in 345 at-bats in Triple-A this season.
Pittsburgh Pirates
Signed: LHP Justin Thomas (re-signed)
Seattle Mariners
Signed: RHP Justin Miller, RHP Yusmeiro Petit (re-signed), SS Sean Kazmar
By signing with the Mariners, well-traveled righty reliever Justin Miller joins his ninth organization. Working backward, he pitched for the Dodgers, Giants, Marlins, Phillies, Devil Rays, Blue Jays, Athletics and Rockies.
Seattle also inked shortstop Sean Kazmar, formerly of the Padres. He's a steady defender with limited offensive upside.
Tampa Bay Rays
Signed: RHP Cory Wade
Cory Wade served as a key cog in the Dodgers' 2008 playoff bullpen as 25-year-old rookie.
Toronto Blue Jays
Signed: LHP Willie Collazo (re-signed), LHP Mike Hinckley
Released: RHP Zach Anderson, RHP Chris Enourato
Elected free agency: OF Dewayne Wise

Washington Nationals
Signed: RHP Carlos Martinez (re-signed), RHP Tim Wood
Elected free agency: RHP Joe Bisenius
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Joe Bisenius

There are a bunch of Braves' guys I have questions about. Catcher J.C. Boscan was reported as having been removed from the 40-man roster, but there's been no word on his fate since then. I was under the impression that his removal did not automatically imply free agency, but perhaps it does. He should've become a minor-league free agent along with the 500-some others…where is he now?
Posted by Tom | November 20, 2010 at 12:56 am | ShortcutAlso, you wrote about how Wilkin Ramirez, once he was removed from the 40-man in August, stood to hit minor-league free agency for the first time. David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the Braves re-signed Ramirez, but I'm curious why that didn't show up in any transaction report.
Finally, local papers in Shreveport (http://www.ksla.com/Global/story.asp?S=13306105) reported that the Braves had signed local indy-league first baseman Christopher Garcia (who ranked third on J.J. Cooper's list of indy-league prospects). Can Transactions Blog confirm this?
Matt, first off, thanks very much for the post every week. Its great information.
Posted by Jimmy | November 21, 2010 at 12:29 pm | ShortcutI've been looking for some detailed transaction history for minor leaguers like past movements of players from one level to another within their major league team's system. The MiLB websties have this information archived back to early 2009, but that's as far back as I can find. Is that information available anywhere?
@Jimmy
Baseball-Reference lists players' start and end dates with various clubs at the bottom of its Minors player pages. But no I've never seen a comprehensive player movement listing. That's the sort of thing one could only really get from MLB's private eBIS transactions databse.
Posted by Matt Eddy | November 21, 2010 at 6:56 pm | ShortcutThanks again, Matt. I was surprised this isn't part of the common player stats.

I have not been able to confirm the Braves signings. The organization has been very busy importing minor league free agents, so maybe announcements on Boscan, Ramirez and Garcia will be forthcoming.
I did read that Boscan may take a minor league coaching position with the Braves.
Posted by Matt Eddy | November 23, 2010 at 10:01 am | ShortcutPer a press release, the Braves have re-signed Boscan and Ramirez.
