Minor League Free Agents 2010

Major league free agents hit the open market at midnight on Nov. 6, five days after the conclusion of the World Series. Baseball America readers know that this date also ushers in the minor league free agency period. The number of MiLB free agents has declined steadily in the past four years, falling from 602 in 2007 to 561 in ’08 to 536 in ’09 to 533 this season.

Any player who was not on a 40-man roster on Nov. 6 qualified for free agency if he had accumulated at least six years of service time (minors and majors inclusive) while still bound by his first uniform minor league player contract. That contract is broken if the player is released or granted free agency by other means before he logs six years. [Update: Teams also can re-sign players to minor league deals prior to Nov. 6 to prevent them from joining the free agent ranks. This is what we've seen in the past few installments of Minor League Transactions. ME.]

Nine free agents spent the entire season (equal to 152 days) on the disabled list. They’re denoted with a double plus sign (++). Players with a single plus sign (+) spent at least half the season (76 games) on the DL. Alfredo Amezaga (four plate appearances) and Clay Zavada (three innings) effectively missed the entire year.

Notes and explanations follow the team-by-team listings.

Notes And Explanations

Classifications. Triple-A players (AAA) make up 57.4 percent of the free agent pool; Double-A (AA) makes up 26.6 percent; High Class A (Hi A) checks in at 9 percent; Low Class A (Lo A) represents 2.4 percent; and 24 players (4.5 percent) finished the year in short-season leagues.

Position Played. Most veteran minor league position players move all over the diamond during the course of the season, so here we try to capture the essence of his experience during the past season or two. They tend to move because they may slide down the defensive spectrum as they age and slow down. Or their organization may consider them a lower priority than a hot new prospect. Or they may be called upon to play out of position to fill gaps in the system. In rare cases, veterans may be taking on additional defensive responsibilities in an effort to shed the 4-A label.

Marlins 31, Cardinals 6.
It's not a football score—it's the two organizations at the extremes. A total of 31 players who finished the season in the Marlins organization were granted free agency. The list includes righthanded reliever Tim Wood, an ’02 draft-and-follow, and corner outfielder Brett Carroll, a 10th-rounder in ’04, both of whom have received extended trials in Florida, the only organization they've ever known. Among the Cardinals' six free agents, only catcher Matt Pagnozzi and righty Matt Scherer signed their first pro contracts with St. Louis.

Where does rhp Justin Lehr of Reds organization fit in?

thx

Mike

Justin Lehr refused an outright assignment a month ago and signed a minor league contract with Cincinnati last week.

Lehr re-signed with the Reds on Oct. 29. He had opted for free agency little more than two weeks earlier when the Reds outrighted him off the 40-man roster.

When a player finish his first uniform minor league contract (after 7 years I think) and is re-signed, a signing bonus is given to this player again?

Thnks,

Matt, I always enjoy reading this list every year.  As a Phillies fan I have a couple questions for you:
Why aren't Dane Sardinha, Tagg Bozied, Nate Bump, and Fidel Hernandez listed as FA's.  The Phils signed them as FAs last year.  Could they have been released earlier in the offseason and therefore aren't considered FAs?
Also, how is Kyle Carr a FA?  He was drafted by Minnesota in 08 so he clearly doesn't have 6 years of service.
Thanks.

Wondering about two players: Pitcher Jeff Sues (signed late in 2010 by the White Sox) and  catcher Mark Johnson, who played sparsely at AAA-Iowa.

Twins signed (former) SFG Eric Hacker to a major league deal this week.

@Todd

1. The Phillies re-signed Sardinha and Hernandez to minor league deals prior to Nov. 6. (Details in forthcoming transactions updates.) Bozied and Bump may have been secured under similar terms, but I don't yet have those details.

2. This is why the term "six year free agent" is a misnomer. Most minor league FAs listed here either have much more or much less experience under their belts. In the case of Kyle Carr, a 12th-round pick by the Twins in ’08, his release during spring training ’09 voided the renewal clause of his first minor league deal (which could have kept him property of the Twins through ’14). When the Phillies signed him in April, they did so on a one-year deal, which expired last week.

Thanks Matt.  I really appreciate the response.  So, does the renewal clause only apply to drafted players or does it apply to all "first minor league contracts" even if a player was a non drafted FA or signed from an independent league?  Also,are all minor league contracts for one year (with the exception of the renewal clause in the first minor league deal)?  Thanks again for your insight.

Hey Matt: C Chris Stewart declared FA last month from the SD Padres. Any word on where he's going? It looks like he signed late in the season last year, so I'm wondering if he'll do the same again.

@Mark @Christine

I don't have specific info on players. We publish what we get from MLB. Jeff Sues and Mark Johnson might have been re-signed prior to Nov. 6. We'll have to wait and see.

As to Chris Stewart, he ought to have his pick of just about any Triple-A gig he wants. He led the PCL in percentage of runners thrown out in 2010. One would think certain big league teams could do worse for a backup catcher.

@Todd

1. The renewal clause attaches only to a player's first pro contract with an organization, and only if he has no previous professional experience. Therefore, college/high school NDFAs and international amateur FAs are subject, while players signed from the indy leagues are not (because they have previous pro experience).

This is also why players who are drafted, voided and then re-signed are not subject to renewal. Technically, the contract they play under is not their first. The Brewers' Cody Scarpetta is the most notable example of this.

2. Most veteran players who ink minor league deals seek the shortest deals possible. Many of them negotiate opt-out dates, allowing them to break minor league contracts if they're not on the big league roster. But I'll have to do more research to see if multi-year minor league deals exist.

@Todd

From what I can gather from agents, nothing would prevent a team from signing a minor league FA to multiple years. But as previously stated, the more veteran players would not want to be locked into an organization where no big league opportunity exists.

Multi-year deals would be more attractive for clubs looking at promising players who have stalled in the low minors for one reason or another. If the club puts in the resources to develop the diamond in the rough, they may want some assurance he won't simply walk away the following year.

[Passage deleted at author's request.]
On past milb free agent listings, some readers have manually put together a list "unofficial" milb fa's who gained that status, electing free agency after being dropped from the 40-man roster. Has anyone been working a list of that sort?
Also of note, Hacker seems to have received a major league contract from the Twins.

Fantastic.  Matt, thanks for the info.

Questions… under Colorado Rockies had Ryan Harvey as a RHP is that the same former prospect of the Cubs who was a first-round pick as an OFer?

@Cody Thorn

One and the same. While Ryan Harvey did not appear in a game as a pitcher, he began working as one behind the scenes for Double-A Tulsa, reportedly hitting the low 90s with sink.

Yes, Ryan Harvey is the former Cubs OF draftee. Ever year there are several position players who get moved to the mound without the recognition of a Matt Bush or Tony Pena Jr.

Matt,

Regarding Greg Smith of the Rockies. As I understand it, when a player is outrighted off the 40 man Roster for the first time, they must return to the organization under a minor league contract (while if they are ourighted again, they have the choice to declare free agency).
These minor league contracts that are defaulted to players outrighted off the roster for the first time or who accept assignment, as I understand it, are one year deals. This is why Al Alburquerque, who was designated for assignment and outrighted early in the year, as able to declare free agency despite not being a 7 year player (his contract was traded to the Rockies from the Cubs, keeping that standard contract intact).

But Greg Smith, who was outrighted off the roster late in the year (first outright of his career), should be subject to the same one year contract, yes? So my question is, why did he not/was he not able to declare free agency? Did he re-sign? Did the minor league deal post-outright assignment end up being longer than one year? What did I miss here?

Thanks!

These guys are minor league free agents, too.

This list contains those minor league FAs who got there by electing free agency instead of a minor league assignment. We’re up to 80 and counting. Check back for updates.

@Greg Stanwood

Al Alburquerque. He signed with the Cubs in July ’03 and debuted the next year in the DSL, so he actually has completed 7 years in the minors (even though two of them—’05 and ’08—were wiped out by injury). Nothing out of the ordinary.

Greg Smith. Short answer: He has more than five years of service, but he doesn't quite have six. Smith pitched 82 innings after signing with the D-backs in June ’05, meaning that he has pitched in at least parts of six years in the minors. But you might notice that no ’05 draft picks appear on the FA list (unless their first contract was broken). That's because none of them quite have six seasons of service yet—their seasons started at midpoint ’05 or later.

Matt,
If I'm not mistaken, Mark Prior signed an atypical deal with the Rangers last season … it was for a 2 year minor league contract (for the remainder of 2010 and all of 2011). Rangers apparently signed him knowing that he wouldn't be able to contribute in '10, but looking at him as a reclamation project for the upcoming year.

Matt,

So players who are outrighted return to their original minor league contracts instead of new ones?

Matt, Thanks for all the information.  I usually get the first account of this list thru Jamey Newberg of the Rangers & ex-Rangers on the list — not sure if he reads all the Comments (e.g. the additional 80 guys listed).  Anyway, you guys do a great job at BA and this FA listing is always one of my "must" reads of the year.

So, Matt, are you saying that players who have been outrighted once (barring considerations that come w/ MLB time) are still operating under their initial contracts / are not eligible for minor league free agency any sooner than anyone else from their 'incoming class'?
(This was my understanding … that this is different from accepting an outright assignment.)

@Russell

We're happy to be your primary source for Rangers and non-Rangers transactions.

I'd like to echo Russell's praise (both for BA as a whole and for this column specifically … which I'm sure isn't the most fun to work on) – it's very much appreciated.

i find it interesting the  large number of ex pirate prospects who are sprinkled amongst all the teams.  Indicates the absolute futility of pirate talent appraisers…

THANK YOU MATT

@Greg Stanwood

Q: "So players who are outrighted return to their original minor league contracts instead of new ones?"

A: Yes, players are bound by the terms of the minor league contract they signed for that season. They do not receive additional compensation in the form of a raise or bonus upon signing a subsequent minor league deal.

@Petey Pablo

Q: "Are players who have been outrighted once still operating under their initial contracts? Are they eligible for minor league free agency any sooner?"

Yes, a team can outright a player from the 40-man roster one time without the player having a say in the matter. However, the other 29 teams have the option of claiming that player on waivers, though they too would have to place him on the 40-man roster—or repeat the outright/waivers process initiated by Team One. That's what happens when a player goes through a succession of rapid waiver claims, like Cesar Carrillo this year (Padres to Phillies to Padres to Astros) and Casey Fien last year (Tigers to Red Sox to Blue Jays).

No, being outrighted does nothing to advance or hinder a player's minor league free agent clock. Service time accrued in the big leagues counts toward minor league free agency.

Does anybody else have a minor league free agency procedural question?

Thanks Matt, it's nice to see your beliefs confirmed.
Follow up, dealing with: "Yes, players are bound by the terms of the minor league contract they signed for that season" and using Jeff Clement (or anyone else, whomever) as an example…
* had he been outrighted in July – he'd be under the terms of whatever split deal he signed going into the year.
* having been outrighted after the season ended – what does this tell us about his contract for 2011? It would be less than he'd get if he were on a 40 man roster, I imagine, but more than non-first year AAA minimum. How does this work?

What do you think of Jose Costanza of the Indians?  Couldn't he be another Wally Taveras?

Thanks for the info Matt!

What happened to Mike Jacobs from Toronto's AAA Las Vegas 51's?

Mike Jacobs elected free agency on Oct. 6.

More official minor league free agents. All four elected FA after outright assignments to the minors. Reds C Corky Miller did the same, but he quickly re-signed.

Cubs: OF Brad Snyder
Royals: RHP Brian Bannister
Blue Jays: OF Dewayne Wise
Nationals: RHP Joe Bisenius

@Scott
Geer’s still with the Padres. Patterson re-signed with Seattle, as did George with the Orioles. Loewen’s still with the Jays. Lumsden and Phillips remain free agents. In the future you can perform a search on the blog for these details and more.
