This time: Sept. 7-15
Arizona Diamondbacks
Acquired: RHP Matt Gorgen from Rays as player to be named for RHP Chad Qualls
Added to 40-man roster: C Konrad Schmidt
Designated for assignment: RHP Cesar Valdez
The Diamondbacks rewarded Konrad Schmidt for his fine season with Double-A Mobile, in which he batted .315/.373/.490 with 11 homers over 394 at-bats to finish third in the Southern League batting and slugging races. The 26-year-old lost out to Tennessee's Robinson Chirinos on the postseason SL all-star team, but he's come a long way since being a Diamondbacks' nondrafted free agent sign out of Nevada in May ’07. Schmidt's got some pop and threw out a league-average 26 percent of basestealers this season with average arm strength. For now, he complements Miguel Montero and John Hester as Arizona's third catcher.
Boston Red Sox
Added to 40-man roster: LHP Rich Hill
Reinstated from DL: SS Derrik Gibson
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Pedro Perez, RHP Kendal Volz
Chicago Cubs
Reinstated from DL: RHP Justin Bristow, RHP Dylan Johnston, RHP Su-Min Jung, RHP Jon Nagel, RHP Brian Schlitter, LHP Jeffry Antigua, LHP John Gaub, LHP J.R. Mathes, LHP John Mincone, C Mark Johnson, 1B Brandon May, OF Francisco Guzman
Chicago White Sox
Placed on 7-day DL: OF Nick Ciolli
Reinstated from DL: OF Brandon Short
Cincinnati Reds
Recalled: RHP Jared Burton
Designated for assignment: RHP Enerio Del Rosario
Reinstated from DL: OF Wladimir Balentien
Placed on temporarily inactive list: OF Luis Terrero
As a reliever for Triple-A Louisville, Jared Burton threw 2 1/3 scoreless, hitless innings in the International League playoffs. He struck out four and walked two in a five-game series defeat to Durham.
The Reds promptly sold Enerio Del Rosario to the Astros after designating him. A two-pitch, groundball-oriented reliever, Del Rosario is hardly a strikeout machine (4.8 per nine innings for Louisville this year and 4.4 last year), but the 24-year-old notched a 2-to-1 ground-to-flyout ratio this year and 4.5-to-1 a year ago.
Cleveland Indians
Recalled: 2B Drew Sutton
Reinstated from DL: RHP Robbie Aviles, RHP Joseph Colon, RHP Santo Frias, RHP Kyle Landis, RHP Alexander Perez, RHP Francisco Valera, 1B Nate Recknagel, 2B Cristo Arnal, SS Carlos Rivero, SS Jason Smit, OF Roman Pena
Colorado Rockies
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Parker Frazier
Reinstated from DL: RHP Charlie Ruiz
Detroit Tigers
Reinstated from DL: RHP Scott Green, RHP Michael Morrison, RHP Tyler Stohr, LHP Casey Crosby, LHP Austin Wood, OF Kyle Peter
Florida Marlins
Recalled: RHP Brett Sinkbeil
Optioned to Triple-A: C Chris Hatcher
The 19th overall pick in the ’06 draft, Brett Sinkbeil, 25, has had a couple challenging seasons as a reliever for Triple-A New Orleans, running up a 5.92 ERA over 146 innings to go with ratios of 6.7 strikeouts and 4.6 walks per nine innings. He keeps the ball on the ground with a 2-to-1 ground-to-flyout ratio. The Marlins don’t seem willing to walk away from his low-90s velocity and hard slider, and Sinkbeil might still become a low-leverage (and low-cost) reliever.
Houston Astros
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Murilo Gouvea
Reinstated from inactive list: C Jon Fixler
Los Angeles Angels
Placed on 7-day DL: OF Richard Cates
Los Angeles Dodgers
Reinstated from inactive list: OF Prentice Redman
Milwaukee Brewers
Signed: C Anderson de la Rosa (re-signed), SS Anderson Machado (re-signed)
Recalled: RHP Mark Rogers
Reinstated from DL: RHP Alex Periard
Six years after his selection fifth overall in the ’04 draft, Mark Rogers made his big league debut for the Brewers. He worked two perfect innings of relief, striking out one, in his first two appearances. If he can stay healthy, the 24-year-old will have a future of some sort in the bullpen—but after missing the ’07 and ’08 seasons with serious shoulder injuries, that's far from a given. Much of Rogers' stuff has survived the surgical procedures. He sits in the low 90s and touches 95 mph and backs it up with a quality changeup and slider.
New York Mets
Reinstated from DL: OF Cesar Puello
New York Yankees
Placed on suspended list: RHP J.B. Cox
Recalled: 1B Juan Miranda, 2B Kevin Russo
Added to 40-man roster: LHP Royce Ring
Designated for assignment: LHP Wilkin de la Rosa, OF Chad Huffman
Removed from 40-man: LHP Wilkin de la Rosa (Double-A)
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Steve Garrison
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Steve Garrison
The Yankees claimed soft-tossing lefty Steve Garrison, a New Jersey native, on waivers from the Padres, while simultaneously dropping Chad Huffman, whom they claimed from San Diego back in April. The link between the two organizations: Special assignment scout Kevin Towers served as San Diego general manager from ’95 through ’09.
Huffman, 25, had a disappointing year for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, batting .274/.353/.410 with 10 home runs, one year after smashing 20 for Triple-A Portland. Huffman went 4-for-14 (.286) with a homer and three RBIs in Scranton's surprising bow-out in the first round of the International League playoffs. That's more than teammates—and September callups—Juan Miranda (.143-0-2) and Kevin Russo (.143-0-1) can say.
Oakland Athletics
Recalled: RHP Vin Mazzaro, C Josh Donaldson, OF Chris Carter
Added to 40-man roster: LHP Bobby Cramer, 2B Eric Sogard, OF Jeremy Hermida
Designated for assignment: RHP Jeff Lyman
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Gary Daley, C Max Stassi, OF Mitch LeVier, OF David Thomas
Reinstated from DL: OF Chris Carter
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Brett Tomko, 2B Jemile Weeks
Vin Mazzaro won his lone Triple-A Pacific Coast League playoff start for Sacramento, going five innings and allowing one run on three hits. He and River Cats teammates Chris Carter, Josh Donaldson and Eric Sogard all earned September callups after a first-round playoff exit at the hands of Tacoma.
Carter mashed 31 homers in the regular season and added one more in the PCL playoffs, while Donaldson went 0-for-11 in the postseason. Sogard capped off a fine season with a 6-for-19 (.316) push in the playoffs that included five walks, seven runs scored, two steals and two RBIs in four games. The steady, lefty-hitting second baseman batted .300/.391/.407 in 514 at-bats on the regular season.
Philadelphia Phillies
Added to 40-man roster: SS Brian Bocock
Pittsburgh Pirates
Released: LHP Neal Cotts, 2B Akinori Iwamura
Removed from 40-man: RHP Brian Bass, C Erik Kratz, 2B Akinori Iwamura (all three to Triple-A)
Reinstated from DL: LHP Neal Cotts
St. Louis Cardinals
Released: 3B Kevin Howard
Placed on 7-day DL: OF Edgar Lara, OF Michael Swinson
Reinstated from DL: RHP Scott Bittle, RHP Mark Diapoules, RHP LaCurtis Mayes, RHP Jason Novak, RHP Josh Squatrito, RHP Miguel Tapia, LHP Hector Cardenas, LHP Dean Kiekhefer, 1B Matt Adams, 1B Angel Rivera, SS Jason Stidham, OF Kyle Conley
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Chris Notti, RHP Oneli Perez
San Diego Padres
Designated for assignment: RHP Craig Italiano
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Nick Schumacher, OF Rymer Liriano
The Padres pared Craig Italiano from the 40-man roster in order to make room (again) for Cesar Carrillo, who lasted only a matter of days with the Phillies after they claimed him on waivers when San Diego tried to sneak him through. The 26-year-old Carrillo went just 5-14, 5.60 in 27 starts for Triple-A Portland—with a correspondingly poor 95-to-57 strikeout-to-walk ratio—but he's proven with back-to-back 150-inning seasons that his arm is fully recovered from Tommy John surgery. At his best, he throws a low-90s heater with sink and two solid secondary pitches, suggesting all sorts of relief possibilities if the starting thing doesn't work out.
San Francisco Giants
Recalled: SS Ryan Rohlinger
Reinstated from DL: RHP Kevin Couture, RHP Michael Main, RHP Osiris Matos, RHP David Newton, RHP Kyle Nicholson, RHP Seth Rosin, RHP Kyle Vazquez, LHP Horacio Ramirez, LHP Ari Ronick, LHP Eric Surkamp, C Aaron Lowenstein, C Guillermo Rodriguez, C Nestor Rojas, 1B Michael Ambort, 1B Andy D'Alessio, 1B Josh Mazzola, 2B Derin McMains, OF Dan Cook, OF Roger Kieschnick, OF Mike McBryde
Seattle Mariners
Added to 40-man roster: C Guillermo Quiroz
Placed on 7-day DL: C Henry Contreras, OF Kalian Sams
Reinstated from DL: OF Jarrett Burgess
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Fray Martinez
Tampa Bay Rays
Traded: RHP Matt Gorgen to Diamondbacks as player to be named for RHP Chad Qualls
Recalled: LHP Jake McGee
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Mike Ekstrom
Mike Ekstrom replaced Jake McGee on Triple-A Durham's roster in between the first and second rounds of the playoffs. The Bulls are locked in battle with the Columbus Clippers for International League supremacy.
Texas Rangers
Recalled: 1B Chris Davis
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Travis Chick, RHP Michael Schlact
Reinstated from DL: SS Edward Koncel
Chris Davis had a hell of a year with Triple-A Oklahoma City, functioning as the club's steadiest hitter in the regular season and the playoffs. The 24-year-old batted .327/.383/.520 with 14 homers and 80 RBIs in 398 at-bats for the RedHawks, and then went 5-for-12 (.417) with a homer and two RBIs in the Pacific Coast League playoffs. As it turned out, Memphis swept Oklahoma City in three straight, which at least hastened Davis' callup to Arlington.
Toronto Blue Jays
Recalled: LHP Brad Mills
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Kyle Drabek
Option transferred: RHP Scott Richmond (Triple-A to Double-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: SS Luis Sanchez
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Chad Jenkins
Washington Nationals
Removed from 40-man: C Carlos Maldonado (Triple-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Evan Bronson, OF Marvin Lowrance
Reinstated from DL: RHP Patrick Arnold, RHP Michael Guerrero, RHP Nathan Karns, RHP Chris McKenzie, LHP Clayton Dill, LHP Jesse English, LHP Austin Garrett, LHP Jack McGeary, C Ricardo Martinez, 2B Jeff Kobernus, 3B Adam Fox, SS Stephen King, SS Adrian Sanchez, OF Justin Bloxom, OF Chris Duncan, OF Jerry Owens
Assigned to Arizona Fall League: RHP Ryan Tatusko, C Derek Norris, 2B Steve Lombardozzi, OF Michael Burgess
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Jason Bergmann
