Added to 40-man roster: RHP Scott Proctor, C J.C. Boscan, 1B Freddie Freeman
Removed from 40-man: OF Wilkin Ramirez (Triple-A)
The Braves took a chance on toolsy 24-year-old Wilkin Ramirez at the trade deadline after the Tigers had designated him for assignment. He batted .253/.351/.458 in 83 at-bats for Triple-A Gwinnett after the trade, but the Braves, like the Tigers before them, chose to remove him from the 40-man roster. Ramirez will qualify for minor league free agency in November.
Baltimore Orioles
Recalled: RHP Chris Tillman, LHP Troy Patton, LHP Pedro Viola, 1B Brandon Snyder, OF Nolan Reimold
Added to 40-man roster: SS Robert Andino

Reinstated from DL: RHP Kevin Landry, LHP Mike Hinckley, C Zach Booker, 2B Scott Moore, SS Mychal Givens
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Raul Rivero
Reinstated from inactive list: C Phillip Britton
Chris Tillman led the Triple-A International League with two shutouts, turning in two of the finest pitching performances in the minors this year. He threw a nine-inning no-hitter against Gwinnett on April 28, logging six strikeouts and one walk. About two months later, on July 5, Tillman one-hit Charlotte over nine innings, logging five strikeouts and one walk. The 22-year-old righthander went 11-7, 3.34 in 21 starts overall and showed terrific control, walking just 2.2 batters and allowing 11.3 baserunners per nine innings. Both marks ranked fifth best in the IL. While Tillman sits at 88-92 mph and lacks elite velocity, he throws a full array of pitches for strikes (including a plus-at-times curveball) and in two Triple-A seasons has notched a fine 3.5-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 218 innings.
Boston Red Sox
Released: RHP Jay Broughton
Recalled: RHP Michael Bowden, LHP Dustin Richardson, OF Josh Reddick
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Robert Coello, 1B Lars Anderson
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Michael Lee, RHP Ryne Miller, RHP Pete Ruiz, SS Derrik Gibson, OF Chih-Hsien Chiang, OF Pete Hissey

Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Pedro Perez, RHP Kendal Volz
Reinstated from inactive list: LHP Chris Hernandez
Michael Bowden has gone 10-13, 3.38 with 6.4 strikeouts per nine in 272 innings for Triple-A Pawtucket, where he's spent most of the past two seasons plus part of ’08. The 23-year-old has demonstrated a clear tendency for flyballs that would seem to make him an imperfect match for Fenway Park. Last year, Bowden finished with a 0.55 ground-to-fly ratio for Pawtucket, but he upped the ante this season with a .35 mark, which would have been the lowest ratio (by a wide margin) the International League had he pitched the 10 more innings necessary to qualify for the ERA title.

Cleveland Indians
Recalled: RHP Carlos Carrasco, RHP Jensen Lewis, OF Jordan Brown
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Nick Sarianides, 2B Cristo Arnal
Reinstated from DL: LHP Giovanni Soto, 2B Lucas Montero
Carlos Carrasco appeared to turn the corner in the second half for Triple-A Columbus, going 2-2, 2.08 with a 44-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio in eight starts. Even with a mediocre first half, he still finished the year with a 3.65 ERA (to rank ninth in the International League) and 7.8 strikeouts per nine innings (to rank fourth).
Colorado Rockies
Recalled: RHP Edgmer Escalona, C Mike McKenry, SS Chris Nelson
Added to 40-man roster: C Paul Phillips, OF Jay Payton
Placed on 7-day DL: SS Thomas Field
Reinstated from DL: RHP Craig Baker, RHP Sean Jarrett, 1B Kiel Roling
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Chris Malone
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Chris Malone
Edgmer Escalona has blown away Triple-A batters with his low- to mid-90s fastball as he's advanced quickly as a reliever in the Rockies system. The 23-year-old, 6-foot-4 Venezuelan paced the Pacific Coast League this season with 9.7 strikeouts per nine innings. Escalona balanced that by allowing a high rate of both walks (4.2) and home runs (2.2) per nine.

Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Adalberto Mendez, RHP Elih Villanueva
In need of catchers after losing John Baker and Brett Hayes to injury and Ronny Paulino to a 50-game drug suspension, the Marlins sought veteran Mike Rivera to complement rookie Brad Davis. The Dodgers released Rivera on Aug. 28.

Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Bobby Blevins, RHP Seth Etherton, RHP Will Savage, C Fumimasa Ishibashi, 3B Corey Smith
Reinstated from DL: RHP Geof Geary, RHP Ji-Mo Lee, RHP Jesus Rodriguez, RHP Eric Thompson, C Esteban Lopez, 1B Clay Calfee, SS Chin-lung Hu, OF Preston Mattingly
Trent Oeltjen has spent the past thee seasons in some very favorable home hitting parks in Triple-A—Tucson, Reno and Albuquerque—but the 27-year-old Australian has the tools to profile as a reserve outfielder in the big leagues. He bats lefty, can cover center field in a pinch and is a career .297 hitter in the minors. The drawback, as it is for many outfielders in Triple-A, is that Oeltjen doesn't defend well enough to hold down center and doesn't slug enough to profile on a corner. Away from the Albuquerque launching pad this year, he batted .280/.368/.462 in 93 at-bats. In the first half of the season with Nashville, Oeltjen batted .301/.355/.496 with eight homers in 266 at-bats.

Added to 40-man roster: RHP Matt Fox, OF Ben Revere
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Rob Delaney
Placed on 7-day DL: 1B Mike Gonzales
Reinstated from DL: SS Toby Gardenhire
Assigned to Arizona Fall League: RHP David Bromberg, RHP Kyle Waldrop, LHP Tyler Robertson, 1B Chris Parmelee, OF Joe Benson, OF Ben Revere
Five prospects from this year's Double-A New Britain Rock Cats (everyone but Kyle Waldrop above) will get extra work in the Arizona Fall League, as they try to erase memories of a dreadful, minor league-worst 44-98 campaign. The last minor league club to lose that many games was the ’03 high Class A High Desert Mavericks.
The Twins called on Matt Fox to make an emergency start on Sept. 3, but despite delivering 5 2/3 decent innings (four hits, two runs) in his big league debut, Minnesota deemed him the odd man out when they added Ben Revere to its 40-man roster. The Red Sox subsequently claimed Fox, 27, on waivers.
New York Mets
Recalled: RHP Sean Green, RHP Jenrry Mejia, LHP Raul Valdes, 1B Nick Evans, OF Jesus Feliciano
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Dillon Gee, C Mike Nickeas, OF Lucas Duda
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Eric Beaulac, C Jean Luc Blaquiere, 2B Alonzo Harris
Reinstated from DL: RHP Guillaume Leduc
Dillon Gee paced the Triple-A International League with 165 strikeouts and just might be this season's most unlikely league strikeout champ. The 24-year-old only occasionally hits 90 mph (he missed much of ’09 with a torn labrum), but he throws four pitches for strikes and walks practically no one (2.3 per nine innings this year). Of course, Gee is around the plate so much that he also surrendered 23 home runs, to rank second in the IL, and went 13-8, 4.96 for Buffalo in a league-leading 28 starts. In his first big league start, he held the Nationals hitless into the sixth inning to notch the win.
In case you were wondering, Lucas Duda led the IL with 42 extra-base hits from June 16 (the date of his first game for Buffalo) to the end of the season, batting .314/.389/.610 with 17 homers in 264 at-bats. Since joining the National League, however, it's been a 180-degree reversal of fortune. Duda began his Mets career by going 1-for-29 (.034) with 10 strikeouts.
New York Yankees
Recalled: RHP Jonathan Albaladejo, OF Colin Curtis, OF Greg Golson
Added to 40-man roster: C Chad Moeller
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Sean Black, RHP Jason Hirsh, RHP Graham Stoneburner, C J.R. Murphy, 2B Corban Joseph, 3B Kevin Mahoney, OF Melky Mesa
Reinstated from DL: C Ryan Baker, C P.J. Pilittere, OF Deangelo Mack
Jonathan Albaladejo wrapped up one of the great relief seasons in recent International League history, setting a new IL saves record (with 43 in 45 attempts for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre) and leading all league relievers in opponent average (.170), strikeouts per nine innings (11.7) and fewest baserunners per nine (8.24). While essentially a one-pitch pitcher—a 92-94 mph sinker—the 27-year-old Albaladejo took his command and effectiveness to a new level this season.

Pittsburgh Pirates
Placed on suspended list: SS Andury Acevedo
Recalled: RHP Brad Lincoln, RHP Joe Martinez, LHP Justin Thomas, C Jason Jaramillo, SS Pedro Ciriaco, OF John Bowker
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Brian Bass, RHP Steven Jackson, OF Brandon Moss, OF Alex Presley
Designated for assignment: C Erik Kratz, 2B Akinori Iwamura
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Ramon Aguero
Reinstated from DL: RHP Brad Lincoln, OF Jonathan Van Every
The Pirates removed Brandon Moss and Steven Jackson from their 40-man roster in April and August, respectively, but each played his way back on with strong play for Triple-A Indianapolis. Moss, a key piece in the organization's ’08 trade of Jason Bay, batted .266/.330/.470 with 22 homers and 32 doubles in 500 at-bats, finishing fourth in the International League with 56 extra-base hits. The 26-year-old led the IL with 96 RBIs.
Despite a modest 37 strikeouts in 56 innings (5.9 per nine innings), Jackson generally kept the ball on the ground (2.1 ground-to-flyout ratio) and sat at 92-94 mph coming out of the bullpen. Throw in an average-or-better slider and changeup and the 28-year-old Jackson has relief or back-of-the-rotation potential. Pittsburgh claimed him on waivers from the Yankees in May ’09, making him an astute low-cost bullpen pickup like lefty Justin Thomas.
Another 28-year-old righty reliever, Brian Bass had gaudier numbers than Jackson while with the Indians—3.0 ground-to-fly, 6.9 strikeouts per nine—but his raw stuff grades out lower than Jackson's.
St. Louis Cardinals
Placed on suspended list: 2B Kevin Howard

Designated for assignment: RHP Cesar Carrillo, LHP Steve Garrison
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Allen Marona, RHP Jackson Quezada, LHP Noah Mull
Reinstated from DL: RHP Mike DeMark, RHP Nick Vincent, LHP Aaron Poreda
Chris Stewart has fashioned a career as an outstanding defensive catcher who can take a walk now and then. In the past five seasons, he's batted .262/.336/.368 over 1,209 at-bats for four different Triple-A clubs, earning a big league cup of coffee with each parent organization—in order the White Sox, Rangers, Yankees and now the Padres. The 28-year-old Stewart hit .248/.337/.395 for Portland this season and led the Triple-A Pacific Coast League this season by throwing out 39 percent of basestealers, after running up corresponding figures of 46 and 41 percent in the preceding two seasons. If San Diego opts not to keep Stewart on its 40-man roster, he'll once again be an in-demand backstop on the minor league market.
San Francisco Giants
Recalled: 2B Emmanuel Burriss, OF Darren Ford, OF Eugenio Velez

Texas Rangers
Signed: RHP Mark Prior (Orange County (Golden))
Recalled: RHP Omar Beltre, RHP Pedro Strop, C Taylor Teagarden
Added to 40-man roster: LHP Clay Rapada, 3B Esteban German
Removed from 40-man: OF Brandon Boggs (Triple-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Sam Brown, RHP Brett Weibley, RHP Joe Wieland, LHP Juan Grullon, LHP Tim Murphy, SS Ed Koncel, OF Teodoro Martinez, OF Clark Murphy
Reinstated from DL: OF Joe Bonadonna
When Mark Prior left his Aug. 10, 2006, start for the Cubs after allowing six runs in thee innings against the Brewers, no one could have guessed that he would not pitch professionally again for nearly four years. But after injuries and thwarted comeback attempts with Chicago in ’07 and the Padres in ’08 and ’09, Prior finally took the hill for Orange County on Aug. 3, 2010. Now 30, Prior proved that he had more than enough stuff to handle independent Golden League batters—in nine relief appearances, covering 11 innings, he fanned 22, walked five and allowed just five hits.
The Rangers acquired lefty reliever Clay Rapada last December in a minor transaction with the Tigers, and after passing through waivers on his outright assignement to Triple-A he turned in a fine season for Oklahoma City. The 29-year-old led all Pacific Coast League relievers with a .158 opponent average and 8.65 baserunners per nine innings, while finishing second with 9.25 strikeouts per nine. Lefthanded batters struck out in 40 percent of at-bats against Rapada while managing a meager batting line of .120/.206/.163 over 92 at-bats.
Toronto Blue Jays
Recalled: RHP Robert Ray, RHP Josh Roenicke, LHP Rommie Lewis, C J.P. Arencibia, 2B Jarrett Hoffpauir
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Shawn Hill
Placed on 7-day DL: OF Concepcion Rodriguez
Reinstated from DL: RHP Henderson Alvarez, RHP Shawn Hill, RHP Ryan Tepera, LHP Rommie Lewis, LHP Ryan Page, C A.J. Jimenez, 3B Randy Schwartz
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Drew Hutchison, RHP Chad Jenkins, LHP Zach Jackson, LHP Luis Perez
By virtue of his callup to Toronto and a late-season slump, J.P. Arencibia finished just short of winning the Pacific Coast League home run title. He still managed to secure the league's MVP award, however, belting 32 homers and batting .301/.359/.626 in 412 at-bats for Las Vegas.
Washington Nationals
Recalled: RHP Collin Balester, RHP Yunesky Maya, C Wilson Ramos
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Joe Bisenius, SS Danny Espinosa
Designated for assignment: C Carlos Maldonado
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Garrett Mock
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Clayton Dill, SS Adrian Sanchez
Reinstated from DL: 3B Luis Ordaz, OF Nick Moresi
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Jason Bergmann, OF Marcus Jones
The 29-year-old Yunesky Maya signed out of Cuba on Aug. 3 and made just five minor league starts prior to his debut for Washington. For Triple-A Syracuse he went 1-1, 0.87 in two turns, striking out nine in 10 1/3 innings while allowing eight hits and five walks.

It's come to this for former first-rounder Cesar Carrillo… being DFA'd is less noteworthy than the career path of a journeyman, second-string catcher.
