USA Baseball will field a team of pros in the 2010 COPABE Pan American Games/World Cup qualifying tournament, set for Puerto Rico from Oct. 1-10.
Ernie Young, the manager of the low Class A Kannapolis Intimidators in the White Sox system and a member of the 2000 gold-medal Team USA club, will manage the American entry in the tournament.
Young and his staff will lead a U.S. team of players not currently on 40-man rosters. Joining Young on Team USA are pitching coach Kirk Champion, hitting coach Leon “Bull” Durham and assistant coaches Jay Bell, Carlos Tosca and Rolando “Roly” de Armas.
Team USA already has received commitments from several top prospects. The list of commitments includes Royals farmhands Eric Hostmer and Mike Moustakas, Angels outfielder Mike Trout, Cubs outfielder Brett Jackson, Indians infielder Cord Phelps and Blue Jays catcher Brian Jeroloman.
