Minor League Transactions: Aug. 2-11

This time: Aug. 2-11

As always, be sure to visit two wonderful Baseball America resources: the Draft Database and Trade Central.

Well, it was worth a shot. The Red Sox acquired Jeremy Hermida from the Marlins last November, hoping the 26-year-old could rekindle his ’07 magic. It didn't happen, as Hermida batted .203/.257/.348 in part-time play and lost his place on the 40-man roster. His stay in the Red Sox's chain ought to be a brief one, because unless he's added again to the 40-man roster, he'll qualify for minor league free agency this winter.

Boston will try again to reclaim a floundering, one-time prospect in the form of catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, a 25-year-old who has hit .252/.336/.449 in parts of three Triple-A seasons.

Of the bounty surrendered by the Red Sox to acquire Hermida, only lefty Jose Alvarez remains with the Marlins. The 21-year-old has gone 8-3, 3.08 in 23 appearances for low Class A Greensboro, notching 9.0 strikeouts and 2.7 walks per nine innings. The Marlins released 26-year-old lefty Hunter Jones in June when they learned that he needed Tommy John surgery.

Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Carlos Torres
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Charlie Shirek, OF Kyle Colligan
Reinstated from DL: RHP Jeff Marquez, OF Josh Kroeger

The 13th overall pick in June, Chris Sale shot from Florida Gulf Coast to the big leagues in little more than a month. The 21-year-old made 11 minor league appearances, notching a 2.61 ERA and striking out 19 in 10 innings, prior to his callup to the White Sox.

Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Antwonie Hubbard, RHP Chen Lee, 1B Nick Weglarz
Reinstated from DL: RHP Chen Lee, RHP Enrique Pacheco, OF Ezequiel Carrera

First baseman Wes Hodges, the Indians' second-round pick in ’06, played his way off third base this year and hit a tepid .271/.315/.418 for Triple-A Columbus. Cleveland thought they could remove him from its 40-man roster and sneak him through waivers, but the Rockies foiled those plans by claiming him on Aug. 3. Colorado then tried to do the same thing, only to lose him two days later on a waiver claim by . . . the Indians. Cleveland remained active on the waiver wire, claiming Reds second baseman Drew Sutton a day later, on Aug. 6.

Colorado Rockies
Placed on restricted list:
2B Omar Quintanilla
Recalled: RHP Esmil Rogers, SS Chris Nelson
Optioned to Triple-A: 2B Eric Young Jr., SS Jonathan Herrera, SS Chris Nelson

The 28-year-old Wes Long batted .285/.398/.460 with seven homers in 285 at-bats for Winnipeg. Drafted by the Athletics in ’04 from Alabama-Huntsville, he has spent the past four seasons in the independent Frontier and Northern leagues since his release from Oakland in December ’06.

Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Mario Santiago

Update: Nicolas Blanco pitched in the independent Can-Am League last season after finishing a collegiate career at SUNY Cortland. According to the Can-Am League's transactions page, Blanco was released this spring. Thanks to reader Dave for the tip.

Los Angeles Angels
Signed:
RHP Aaron Tullo (NDFA—Tennessee)
Draft pick signed: RHP Vinnie St. John (45)

Reinstated from DL: RHP Claudio Vargas, LHP Cody White, 1B Dustin Yount, 2B Austin Yount

It seems inconceivable that any bench could feature more grizzle than the Dodgers' conglomeration this year. Oldest to youngest: Brad Ausmus (age 41), Garret Anderson (38, and recently released), Jamie Carroll (36), Ronnie Belliard (35) and Reed Johnson (33) are the principals. So this means that Juan Castro (38) and Jay Gibbons (33) ought to fit right in.

The Dodgers released and then quickly re-signed Michael Restovich. The chain of events kicked off when the Dodgers first had to make room for Xavier Paul on the Triple-A Albuquerque roster, making Restovich the odd man out. But when Los Angeles called up Jay Gibbons two days later, they found they needed an outfielder—and fast.

New York Mets
Released:
2B James Ewing
Placed on restricted list: LHP Zach Dotson
Recalled: SS Ruben Tejada, OF Fernando Martinez
Optioned to Triple-A: OF Jesus Feliciano
Option transferred: RHP Jenrry Mejia (high Class A to Double-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Kyle Allen, RHP Brian Bruney, RHP Brant Rustich, 3B Jefry Marte
Reinstated from DL: RHP Samuel Martinez, RHP Scott Shaw, C Kai Gronauer, 3B Eric Campbell

In May, the Mets' top pick in the ’09 draft, lefty Steve Matz, had Tommy John surgery. The organization's bad luck with prep pitchers from that draft got a little bit worse when lefthander Zach Dotson, a 13th-round pick who signed for a well-above-slot $500,000, tested positive for Methylhexaneamine and was suspended for 50 games.

New York Yankees
Draft picks signed:
RHP Gabe Encinas (6), RHP Tommy Kahnle (5), RHP Zach Nuding (30)
Released: RHP Tim Redding

Oakland Athletics
Signed:
RHP Yadel Marti (Veracruz (Mexican))

Designated for assignment: 3B Adam Heether
Removed from 40-man: 3B Adam Heether (Triple-A)
Optioned to Triple-A: 1B Jeff Larish, OF Matt Carson
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Kyle Middleton, C Josh Donaldson, C Ryan Ortiz, 3B Adam Heether
Reinstated from DL: LHP Travis Blackley, C Dusty Napoleon, 2B J.C. Holt

Yadel Marti, 31, defected from Cuba in December ’08 and latched on with Veracruz of the Mexican League this season, going 2-2, 4.19 in eight starts. He pitched in the Dominican League last winter, and his name may be recognizable to World Baseball Classic aficionados. Marti won a game and saved two others during Cuba's second-place finish in the ’06 WBC. The A's assigned him to Double-A Midland, though he has yet to pitch for the RockHounds.

A 29th-round pick this year, Hurley drew a 50-game suspension, along with five others, on Aug. 6.

Philadelphia Phillies
Signed:
LHP Drew Rundle, OF Ryne White (Windy City (Frontier))
Released: LHP Kevin Angelle
Recalled: LHP Antonio Bastardo, OF John Mayberry Jr.
Removed from 40-man: 3B Cody Ransom (Triple-A)
Optioned to Triple-A: OF John Mayberry Jr.
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Nate Bump
Placed on 60-day DL: RHP Siulman Lebron
Reinstated from DL: RHP Eric Massingham, C Joel Naughton, 1B Kelly Dugan

Ryne White latched on in the Frontier League after his release from the Cubs this spring. Chicago had acquired him a few months earlier, in November ’09, when they traded Aaron Heilman to the Diamondbacks. White batted .274/.356/.415 with five homers in 212 at-bats for Windy City.

Pittsburgh Pirates
Draft picks signed:
RHP Brandon Cumpton (9), RHP Ryan Hafner (17), RHP Nick Kingham (4)
Released: RHP Jeff Sues, C Andrew Walker
Traded: C Luke Carlin to Indians for future considerations
Traded: SS Brian Bixler to Nationals for future cosiderations
Traded: OF Brandon Jones to Tigers for future considerations
Removed from 40-man: RHP Steven Jackson (Triple-A)
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Justin Thomas, C Erik Kratz
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Travis Chick, RHP Casey Erickson, RHP Teddy Fallon, RHP Melkin Laureano, RHP Dustin Molleken
Reinstated from DL: LHP Dana Eveland, 1B Justin Howard, 2B Akinori Iwamura, 3B Jeremy Farrell, OF Wes Freeman
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Dovydas Neverauskas, 2B Kevin Melillo
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Jeff Sues

Jeff Sues (’05, Vanderbilt) and Andrew Walker (’07, Texas Christian) each entered the organization as a fifth-round pick. Walker, 24, batted an improbable .091/.221/.136 in 22 games for high Class A Bradenton this year. That's 6-for-66 with one home run. Walker's catching skills had been going backward since his draft year, but unfortunately so too has his bat. Drafted for his power bat, he hit 14 home runs and slugged .379 in 639 career at-bats.

Sues once sat in the mid-90s, and that was hard enough to rank as the system's No. 7 prospect in our ’09 Handbook. The 27-year-old stalled with Double-A Altoona, though, and this season struck out 19 and walked 12 in 26 innings for the Curve. Sues will flash an average fastball and curve from time to time, but he's not the same pitcher he was two years ago.

Reinstated from DL: 1B Matt Fields
Placed on temporarily inactive list: 2B Elliot Johnson

The Rays finally rewarded 31-year-old slugger Dan Johnson for his fine play for Triple-A Durham by calling him up to replace the injured Carlos Pena. All Johnson did in the minors was hit .303/.430/.624 in 340 at-bats to lead the IL in on-base percentage, slugging, home runs (30), RBIs (95) and walks (75).

Fun fact: Mike Folli's given name is Ateo, and he attended University at Buffalo, making him one of four Bulls in the pros.

Texas Rangers
Draft pick signed:
RHP John Kukuruda (28)
Released: RHP Geoff Geary
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Tae Ahn, LHP Martin Perez, C Chris Gradoville, C Johnathon Moore, OF Engel Beltre, OF Jason Kudlock

RHP Yunesky Maya
Acquired: SS Brian Bixler from Pirates for future cosiderations
Added to 40-man roster: OF Kevin Mench
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Collin Balester
Optioned to Rookie-level: RHP Yunesky Maya
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Zach Dials, RHP Jason Jones, RHP Rafael Martin, RHP Chris McKenzie, RHP Wanel Vasquez, 2B Jeff Kobernus, 3B Luis Ordaz, SS Wilberto Ortiz
Reinstated from DL: RHP Orlando Hernandez, RHP Jason Jones, RHP A.J. Morris
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Andrew Kown
Reinstated from inactive list: LHP Chris Manno, 1B Russ Moldenhauer, OF Michael Burgess

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo introduced 28-year-old righthander Yunesky Maya, a Cuban defector, as the organization's "first major international signing that we think is going to impact our major league ball club immediately." Maya went 13-4, 2.22 last year to lead Cuba's Serie Nacionale in wins, innings (146) and shutouts (four). He signed a big league deal with Washington worth between $6 million and $8 million.

Keenan Wiley was not a NDFA..his contract was purchased from River City of the Frontier League.

Happy for indy league vets Long and Dowdy..

Is Blanco the SUNY-Cortland pitcher who played in the Can-Am League last year? (19 H and 16 BB in 8.2 IP!)

Both leads about Wiley and Blanco were correct and worth following up.

The transaction for Mike Folli is in the wrong direction:  he used to be in the Cardinals organization and is now in the Rays system.

Does anyone know what happened to RHP's Brian Omogrosso and Derek Rodriguez of the White Sox system?  I know they initially were hurt but I have seen nothing on them all season.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks
