Orioles scout Chris Gale saw Glynn Davis in junior college, and the organization worked him out prior to the draft, but the two sides did not come together until mid-August, when Baltimore reportedly handed over top-10 rounds money. A Juco all-American, Davis is a righthanded-hitting center fielder with plus-plus speed, according to a detailed report from MASN sports.

The Cubs have run through an astounding 11 rookie pitchers this season, leaning heaviest on relievers James Russell, Andrew Cashner, Justin Berg and Jeff Stevens. But Mitch Atkins, Jeff Gray, Brian Schlitter, Marcos Mateo and Esmailin Caridad have all made appearances out of the pen, while Casey Coleman and Thomas Diamond have combined to make five starts.

So when Chicago called up 25-year-old lefty Scott Maine, it gave the Cubs an even dozen rookie pitchers. With low-90s heat and a hard, sweeping slider, Maine would seem to be suited to a specialist role, but there's hope that he can be more than that. The reason: Maine was more effective against righthanded batters for Triple-A Iowa because he walked fewer of them. Neither side hit him for average or power—601 OPS against righties and 713 against lefties. Not a bad return at all for trading Aaron Heilman to Arizona.

You might remember Pablo Menchaca from the Padres ’07 Top 30 Prospects, where at No. 27 he ranked one spot ahead of Simon Castro, who in the author's defense had just run up a 4.63 ERA in the Dominican Summer League. At any rate, Menchaca wrapped up a solid age-22 season in the Mexican League, running up a 2.64 ERA in 55 games for Monterrey. His ratio of 1.9 walks per nine innings ranked fourth among relievers in the league.

Tzu-Wei Lin, a 16-year-old shortstop from Taiwan, won MVP honors at this year's Junior World Championship. The Yankees agreed to a six-figure bonus with him, but Lin reportedly now wishes to void the contract so that he can take a larger offer from the Twins or Athletics. Taiwanese media reports indicate that the Twins offered nearly twice as much as the Yankees, but that Lin's agent steered him to New York.

A person familiar with Lin's amateur career writes: "Lin is only 5-foot-7 but is toolsy. Not sure if he stays at shortstop, but he is at least a second baseman or center fielder. He is a plus runner with average defense/range, the potential for above-average bat, gap power and above-average arm. Good baseball instincts."
