The Phillies signed Venezuelan shortstop Francisco Silva for a bonus of around $200,000, according to an international source. Silva, a 16-year-old from Maracay who is around 5-foot-11, 175 pounds, is a plus runner with a plus arm whose defensive tools are ahead of his bat.
The Twins agreed to terms with Reyson Zoquier, a 5-foot-11, 165-pound lefty from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, for a six-figure bonus, according to another international source. Zoquier throws in the high-80s and can touch 90 mph, complementing his fastball with a curve and a changeup.
The Athletics, in addition to signing Venezuelan third baseman Renato Nunez for $2.2 million, also announced two more July 2 signings out of Venezuela. According to an official release, the club agreed to terms with lefthander Anderson Mata, a 17-year-old from Margarita who is 5-foot-11, 165 pounds, and lefthander Jose Torres, who at 16 is 6-foot-2, 160 pounds, from Caracas.
