Minor League Transactions

This time: July 6-13

Be sure to check out our Draft Database for a more comprehensive look at recently signed draft picks.

An asterisk (*) denotes an instance of a player agreeing to terms on a minor league contract with an organization with which he already had a major league agreement.

Arizona Diamondbacks
Signed:
LHP Rashad Tucker (NDFA—Missouri Baptist)
Draft picks signed: RHP Jeremy Erben (22), RHP Kevin Munson (4), RHP Jeff Shields (7), 2B Niko Gallego (27), 3B Stephen Cardullo (24), SS Mike Freeman (11)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP T.J. Hose, RHP Brett Moorhouse, SS Chris Owings
Reinstated from DL: RHP Scottie Allen, SS Jake Wald, OF Chris Rahl

Kevin Munson, a fourth-rounder from James Madison, began his pro career with low Class A South Bend, tossing two scoreless innings with two strikeouts.

In an aggressive assignment for a 27th-round pick, the Diamondbacks sent Niko Gallego straight to high Class A Visalia, where he began 1-for-12. But then as the son of a 13-year big league veteran, Gallego is no ordinary 27th-round pick. Like his father Mike, a utility infielder for the A's, Yankees and Cardinals, Niko attended UCLA.

Atlanta Braves
Signed:
C Shawn McGill (Lincoln (American Association)), OF Brendan Rowland (NDFA—Albany)
Released: RHP Ryne Reynoso, 2B Travis Jones
Traded: LHP Jo-Jo Reyes and SS Yunel Escobar to Blue Jays for LHP Tim Collins, SS Alex Gonzalez and SS Tyler Pastornicky
Placed on military list: LHP Matt Fouch
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Luis De Luna, RHP Ernesto Silva, LHP Chase Shreve, C Chris Anderson, OF Josh Anderson, OF Bobby Hefflinger
Placed on 60-day DL: RHP Reidy Escobar
Reinstated from DL: RHP Steven Figueroa, LHP Alexis Pinto
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Frank Lafreniere

Matt Fouch, a 34th-round round pick this year, appeared in a combined six games for Rookie-level Danville and low Class A Rome, striking out 10 and walking one, before the Army recalled him to active duty. The Braves to not expect him back this season.

Baltimore Orioles
Signed:
RHP Jesse Rasner (NDFA—Nevada), LHP Cory Ast (NDFA—Colorado School of Mines)
Draft picks signed: RHP Sebastian Vader (18), OF Blair Dunlap (43)
Released: RHP Josh Goodin, RHP Chris Hervey, RHP Chris Schmitt
Recalled: RHP Chris Tillman
Optioned to Triple-A: 3B Josh Bell
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Josh Perrault, LHP Brandon Holloway, OF Mike Planeta, OF Robbie Widlansky
Reinstated from DL: C Zach Booker, 1B T.J. Baxter

Jesse Rasner attended Nevada, just like his cousin Darrell, who spent parts of four seasons in the big leagues with the Nationals and Yankees. Darrell is now in his second season with Japan's Rakuten Golden Eagles. Meanwhile, Darrell's brother Jake pitches in the White Sox system.

While it's not a definitive count by any means, we have only one other Colorado School of Mines alum, in addition to Cory Ast, in our database: Marshall Schuler, the Phillies' 37th-rounder this year. A school press release lists just two other draftees, the most recent being 1973. So CSOM clearly is not a baseball powerhouse on par with the Savannah College of Art & Design (four pros, including Charlie Zink, Yankees ’07 third-rounder Ryan Pope and Braves ’08 11th-rounder Richard Sullivan) or the Philadelphia College of Textiles (’99 16th-rounder Shaun Babula).

(Update: Two other Philadelphia College of Textiles products have surfaced, both of whom reached the big leagues—righthander Bob File, a 19th-round pick by the Blue Jays in ’98; and righthander Curtis King, a fifth-round pick by the Cardinals in ’94.)

Boston Red Sox
Signed:
RHP Patrick Ryan (Bridgeport (Atlantic)), C Adalberto Ibarra, OF Juan Carlos Linares
Added to 40-man roster: 1B Ryan Shealy
Removed from 40-man: SS Niuman Romero (Triple-A)
Placed on temporarily inactive list: 3B Jorge Jimenez

Among the Red Sox's signings are a pair of Cuban defectors: 22-year-old catcher Adalberto Ibarra, who signed for a reported $4.3 million, and outfielder Juan Carlos Linares, a slugger who may be 25 or 26 years old. Ibarra's agent indicated that the catcher will be added to the 40-man roster in short order.

Chicago Cubs
Draft pick signed:
RHP Dallas Beeler (41)
Released: OF Runey Davis
Recalled: RHP Mitch Atkins
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Marcus Hatley, RHP Tarlandas Mitchell, LHP Jeffry Antigua, 1B Brandon May

Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Mark Serrano
Reinstated from DL: SS Jake Kahaulelio, OF Sean Conner

Drafted as a first baseman last year from Young Harris (Ga.) JC, Derrick Lowery tried his hand at pitching before drawing his release. He gave up nine runs on 12 hits over 5 1/3 innings in the Rookie-level Arizona League.

Cleveland Indians
Traded:
SS Brian Bixler to Pirates for a player to be named or cash considerations
Added to 40-man roster: C Chris Gimenez

The Marlins signed second-rounder Rob Rasmussen, from College World Series runner-up UCLA, and assigned him to low Class A Greensboro.

Removed from 40-man: OF Yordany Ramirez (Triple-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Juan Mojica, RHP Jose Trinidad, OF T.J. Steele
Reinstated from DL: RHP Jared Wells, LHP Kilby Pena, SS Edwin Maysonet, OF Brian Pellegrini
Placed on temporarily inactive list: 2B Luis Maza, OF Grant Hogue
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Erik Stiller

Ariel Ovando, a 16-year-old Dominican, signed for a bonus between $2.6 and $2.8 million, the most ever paid by the Astros to an amateur player.

Kansas City Royals
Draft picks signed:
LHP Kevin Chapman (4), OF Whit Merrifield (9)
Placed on restricted list: RHP Luis Cota
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Tim Melville, RHP Nick Wooley, SS John Alfaro, OF Nick Van Stratten
Reinstated from DL: RHP Devon Lowery
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Mario Santiago, LHP Kevin Chapman, 2B Irving Falu

Kevin Chapman, a fourth-rounder from Florida, went straight to high Class A Wilmington, joining first-rounder Christian Colon. Chapman worked around three hits to throw a scoreless inning of relief in his debut.

Ninth-rounder Whit Merrifield struck the final hit in 2010 College World Series, a walk-off single to give South Carolina the walk-off win in 12 innings. The Omaha Royals will continue to play at Rosenblatt Stadium, but it was the final CWS hit in that park.

Draft pick signed:
LHP Logan Darnell (6)

New York Mets
Signed:

Optioned to Triple-A: OF Jesus Feliciano
Optioned to high Class A: RHP Ryota Igarashi
Placed on 7-day DL: 1B D.J. Wabick
Reinstated from DL: LHP Jimmy Johnson, OF Brahiam Maldonado

Stephen Clyne spent 17 games in Double-A last season, finishing with a 7.31 ERA with more walks (20) than strikeouts (17). But otherwise he has topped out with high Class A St. Lucie, for whom he allowed 31 baserunners in 14 innings this season. The Mets' third-round pick in ’07, Clyne signed as a fifth-year senior from Clemson for about $100,000, easily the lowest bonus paid to any player in the top three rounds.

New York Yankees
Signed:
1B Chad Tracy

Reinstated from DL: RHP John Van Benschoten

Oakland Athletics
Draft pick signed:

Reinstated from DL: RHP Chris Mederos, RHP Jason Ray, RHP Henry Rodriguez, RHP Brett Tomko, C Yusuf Carter
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Justin Souza

The A's plucked Beau Vaughan from the Rangers system in last December's minor league Rule 5 draft. The 29-year-old pitched well for Double-A Midland (2.92 ERA, 3-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio) but hit a wall with Triple-A Sacramento. That's been the story of Vaughan's career—his ERA in Double-A is nearly two full runs lower than his Triple-A mark, and his walks, hits and home runs allowed are appreciably better at the lower level.

Philadelphia Phillies
Removed from 40-man:
C Dane Sardinha (Triple-A), SS Brian Bocock (Triple-A)
Designated for assignment: OF Quintin Berry
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Mike Zagurski
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Brian Gordon, LHP Brian Mazone, C Joel Naughton, 1B Kelly Dugan
Reinstated from DL: C Marco Davalillo

The Padres claimed local product Quintin Bery on waivers and sent him to Double-A San Antonio. The Phillies made him a fifth-round pick out of San Diego State in ’06. Berry has swiped 197 bases at a 78 percent success rate in his five-year career. After leading the South Atlantic and then Florida State leagues with 55 and 51 steals, he narrowly missed out on his third consecutive stolen-base crown last year when Akron's Jose Constanza edged him 49 to 48 for the Eastern League lead.

Pittsburgh Pirates
Draft picks signed:
RHP Kevin Kleis (27), RHP Logan Pevny (49), RHP Bryton Trepagnier (41)

What happened to Nate Karns?

Anybody know why Christopher Manno is on WASH restricted list?  He looked like a wonderful pitcher at Duke in 2009.

Any word on what happened with Korbal? I know the Padres had to re-do his contract when they found a pre-existing injury after the draft last year and he had TJ surgery, but I had heard he was in pretty good shape at this point.

Philadelphia College of Textiles can claim at least one former major leaguer, IIRC. Bob File a righthanded reliever with Toronto.

Bob File is the correct answer.

Ah, good catch. Entry updated.

Two other Philadelphia College of Textiles products have surfaced, both of whom reached the big leagues—righthander Bob File, a 19th-round pick by the Blue Jays in ’98; and righthander Curtis King, a fifth-round pick by the Cardinals in ’94.
